Greenwood hopes to raise $4K for Pasta for Pennies
To the Editor:
On Thursday, Feb. 21, our beloved first grade teacher, Mrs. Denise Walker, passed away following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Since her passing, the Greenwood School community, and especially the students whose lives were so deeply touched by Mrs. Walker, has looked for ways to commemorate her life in a manner that is in keeping with her compassion and commitment toward others. To achieve this goal, I believe that the perfect solution has come from our students: continuing Mrs. Walker’s dedication toward finding a cure for cancer through the Pasta for Pennies program.
For well over a decade, Mrs. Walker led our school’s participation in Pasta for Pennies, and her commitment to the cause resulted in her work being honored with a beautiful trophy from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in 2012. To continue Mrs. Walker’s legacy, our school’s student council is continuing participation in Pasta for Pennies and set a lofty goal of $4,000; about $200 more than our current record collection. Unfortunately, with only a week to go before the collection ends on March 22, our current total stands at a little less than $1,000.
I know that we live in difficult economic times and that donating money is difficult for many. For readers who were touched by Mrs. Walker’s greatness, and are able to manage a contribution of any amount, I respectfully ask that you consider honoring her memory by donating to Pasta for Pennies by either writing a check to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or bringing cash for our collection here at the Greenwood School. I cannot think of a better way to honor the life of an exemplary teacher and friend who consistently dedicated herself to serving others. The donations we receive will not only help us to reach our students’ lofty goal, but, more importantly, these funds will go toward ensuring that the plague of cancer is eventually eradicated. I’m confident that would bring a smile to the face of our wonderful colleague, teacher and friend.
Thank you for your consideration.
