TEAM WORK: Dressed in costume, Skyla Lytle and Victoria Jordan do their part to help with the food drive by carrying a box of canned goods out of the school.

Students at Oakland Beach School began collecting canned food items during the week of Halloween and will continue to do so through Thanksgiving to benefit the St. Rita Food Pantry.

Sixth grade teacher Meg Shideler said students hope to raise at least $2,000, which would match last year’s total, and as of Nov. 8 had collected 839 cans. Shideler said each week has a theme; for Halloween, if students brought in a can, they could dress in costume; last week the theme was sports where students could wear jerseys and hats to support their favorite team; this week is the theme is fun hats and mismatch opposite; and the theme for the final week is crazy hair.

“This is in response to Alan Shawn Feinstein’s challenge to feed the hungry,” she said, adding that sixth grade honor society members go around each week and collect the canned goods but students throughout the school participate in the food drive.

“This is a school-wide project and we’re looking to give back to the community,” she said.

Shideler said during the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, a big raffle will be held as the school celebrates the drive and makes the final donation.
