SHOPLIFTING
Officer Jeffrey Chapman reported he was dispatched to the area of the Kmart store on Garfield Avenue around 9 a.m. on Feb. 4 for a shoplifting in progress. Dispatch informed him that the suspect was running up a hill to the rear of the building. He said he jumped out of his car, ran up the hill, jumped over the fence where the suspect was last seen and saw that police coming from the other direction had driven him back toward the rear of a residence. He said he ordered him to the ground and took Devon Rich, 18, of 787 Potters Ave. in Providence into custody. Chapman said he found a stolen toothbrush in the suspect’s pocket and another officer found the toothpaste, shoelaces and underwear and the black hoodie he was charged with taking. Rich was later remanded to the ACI when he could not pay the $15,000 surety bail.
Jeremy Diaz, 18, of 21 Barry Rd. in Providence was charged with shoplifting at the Kmart store on Garfield Avenue on Feb. 6 after loss prevention at the store told police he cut some packages open in the electronics department and pocketed some $70 worth of parts. Officer Ryan Dimbleby reported he measured the blade of the knife he found on Diaz and added an illegal weapons-other-than-firearms charge.
Officer Ashley Hardy arrested a Connecticut man in the CVS store on Reservoir Avenue on Feb. 6. A loss prevention agent told her he aw the man go through the store, removing items from packages and concealing them on his person. She said they recovered 11 items worth $148.89 from Bradley A. Wood, 27, of 169 Tripp Hollow Rd. in Brooklyn. He was later released on $1,000 personal recognizance.
WHY THEY GET CAUGHT
Officer Lee Sohn stopped a car with expired registration and inspection stickers on it on Feb. 3 and arrested the driver when he learned there was a warrant out for him for failure to appear in District court. Hector Huertas, 31, of 767 Atwells Ave. in Providence was given tickets for the vehicle violations and then transported to District Court on the warrant.
Officer Randall Babcock reported stopping a car for an expired inspection sticker and arrested the driver, Bury Charles Jean Francois, 19, of 87 High St. in Cranston for driving on a suspended license. His passenger, identified as Joadean Montervil, 18, of 575 Dyer Ave. was arrested on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in District Court. Montervil was later transported to the ACI.
Officer Donald Salvatore reported he stopped a car for running a light on Feb. 4 and ended up arresting the passenger on an outstanding warrant. The driver got a ticket. The passenger, Richard Charles Olivelli Jr. of 24 Sherwood St. in Cranston, was later transported to the ACI to await arraignment in Superior Court for failure to appear.
DUI & REFUSAL
Officer Lee Sohn reported seeing a car operating erratically near Dyer Avenue and Alto Street around 1 a.m. on Feb. 5 and then stop in the middle of the intersection for particular reason. He followed the car when it finally made a quick turn into a driveway on Alto. He said he was getting out of his cruiser when the man jumped out of the car and declared he was at his sister’s and said he didn’t have a license. He said the man appeared to be drunk and smelled of alcohol. He said he gave the man a field sobriety test and he failed it, “got into the ‘crane position’ (compared to the Karate Kid)” for the One Leg Stand Test. Lamberto Jose Nunez, 37, of 26 Bracken St. in Cranston was taken to headquarters where he blew a .201 and a .186 and a .205 blood alcohol content on the three breath tests. Officer Jonathan Quaranto reported he assisted with the breath tests at headquarters and heard a belligerent Nunez direct “a tirade of insults” at Sohn and said “he was going to call his people and that he [Sohn] was going to die.” Nunez was charged with DUI and driving on a suspended license and later released on $1,000 surety bail.
Officer David Jubinville reported he was on patrol around 1:10 a.m. on Feb. 4 when he noticed a car operating erratically near the El Tipico bar on Gansett Avenue before it drove around a car in the intersection while continually sounding its horn before making another turn without a directional. He said he stopped the car at Cranston and Cleveland and asked the driver why he was making so much noise and passed the other car. He said the driver told him they “were so slow.” He said the driver appeared to be drunk and failed a field sobriety test, saying “I can’t even do this sober.” Ryan N. Landry, 27, of 126 Birchwood Dr. in Cranston was arrested and taken to headquarters where he refused a breath test. He was charged with DUI and refusal and later released on $1,000 personal recognizance.
