A new cook?

Warwick Beacon ·

Mayor Scott Avedisian stepped behind the counter at Sam’s New York System on Freeborne Street across from Thayer Arena on Monday to try his hand at preparing hot wieners. The reason for the visit was to put the spotlight on the 50th anniversary of the business that had its start in the Bayshore Plaza at Wilde’s Corner. The plaza is gone, but Sam’s is still here. As a “thank you” to all of their loyal customers, Sam’s has been running a weekly customer appreciation raffle that began on Feb. 12 and runs until March 5. They will be hosting a customer appreciation week beginning March 12, where guests can enjoy their famous hot weiners, any style, for just $1.50 each. Pictured with the mayor are Peter Xiarhos, who runs the business started by his late father, Mike Dunn, Peter’s mother, Kathy, who still works the store, and his brother, George. When Kathy gave Avedisian a thumbs-up for his performance, the mayor joked, “If I lose the next election I’ll be in for a job.” Asked if that was a declaration he’ll be seeking reelection, Avedisian said, “no.” Sam’s is open Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. (Warwick Beacon photo)
