Angry Vikings fan arrested on domestic charge in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH — Here are some highlights from the Portsmouth Police reports from over the past week.

Monday, Nov. 7

A 17-year-old Portsmouth girl was charged with possession of a controlled substance, a felony, at Portsmouth High School around 12:30 p.m. Several teachers had reported the girl smelled of marijuana, and after she was escorted to the nurse’s office she produced a baggy containing four pills that were later identified as Tramadol Hydrochloride and Metaxall, police said. The matter was referred to Family Court.

Tuesday, Nov. 8

An Atlantic Avenue man told police that someone had stolen his Donald Trump campaign sign sometime overnight. He said other political signs have been taken from his property several times in the past few months.

Wednesday, Nov. 9

Robert J. Mellen, 56, of 7 Shadowbrook Lane, Apt. E, Smithfield, was charged at 1:36 a.m. with driving while intoxicated and refusal to submit to a chemical test. Police said they stopped his vehicle on Turnpike Avenue because it had left the lane of travel.

Thursday, Nov. 10

Police euthanized a badly hurt deer that was found in the area of Freeborn and Dexter streets around 1:30 a.m. Both rear legs were severely injured and the animal was clearly in pain, police said.

A vehicle driven by Phillip Quinn of Middletown struck and killed a deer that had darted out onto West Main Road near Twin Lanterns Camping Cabins shortly after 11 p.m. The car sustained heavy damage to its front bumper and had to be towed from the scene.

Friday, Nov. 11

Christopher S. Toppa, 22, of 1193 East Road, Tiverton, was charged at 3:46 a.m. with possession of a controlled substance, a felony. Police stopped his vehicle on Route 24 North near Cedar Island for speeding and leaving the lane of travel. During a search of the vehicle, police said they found two green pills, identified as Alprazolam.

Jake D. Fernandez, 26, of 3 Squantum Drive, Middletown, was charged with driving while intoxicated (first offense) just before midnight. Police stopped his car for speeding on Hedly Street.

Saturday, Nov. 12

Thomas H. Levesque, 40, of 51 Islington Ave., was charged around 1 a.m. with domestic assault, domestic refusal to relinquish a telephone and resisting arrest. Officers responded to his home after receiving a 911 call and met with Mr. Levesque, who appeared intoxicated and was not cooperative, police said. After ignoring warnings to stop approaching police on the front porch of the home, Mr. Levesque was tasered and starting running back into the house, police said. Police pursued him and deployed another taser until he finally complied with orders to get on the ground, police said. A woman in the home was bleeding from her mouth but refused medical treatment, police said. Mr. Levesque allegedly punched her in the mouth before throwing her down a set of stairs and taking her cell phone away, police said.

The owner/manager of West Main Pizza, 1620 West Main Road, told police that the establishment had been vandalized sometime overnight. The wires connecting the phone lines had been completely ripped out of the socket, causing the phones to be inoperable, he told police. 

Sunday, Nov. 13

Erik A. Nordby, 37, of 53 Gormley Ave., was charged with domestic disorderly conduct after police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at his home around 7:15 p.m. Police said they saw visible damage to the interior of the house, including panels ripped from walls. Mr. Nordby also allegedly threw items down the stairs and punched a wall, knocking a picture frame from the wall and shattering it. An officer found Mr. Nordby upstairs in his room, where he was laying on his bed. He was visibly intoxicated and slurring his words, police said. Mr. Nordby said he was angry because the Minnesota Vikings had lost their football game earlier that day and at one point threatened to fight an officer, police said. While being placed in a holding cell at the police station, Mr. Nordby refused to remove his glasses and then threw them to the ground, damaging the frame, police said. He also began punching the cell door, which swelled his hands, according to police. He was transported to Newport Hospital for X-rays, but the results were negative, police said.
