WESTPORT — The long-dormant tradition of theater at Westport Junior-Senior High School is alive and well once again, first with last year’s “Footloose,” and then last weekend with a triumphant performance of “Beauty and the Beast.”

For three shows, Friday and Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, the school Drama Club under the direction Matthew Shivers, the school’s theater head of theater and an English teacher, delighted audiences with the story and songs of Belle, the Beast and friends. Providing musical accompaniment was an orchestra of students, teachers and community volunteers.

“It was the biggest production at this school in quite a long while,” said Principal Cheryl Tutalo, “and all involved did an absolutely beautiful job.”

Participants had been preparing for much of the school year, and their work paid off.

“It always amazes me when it comes to big things to see the talent, commitment and teamwork we have here,” the principal said. “A huge, huge triumph.”
