Boss Man Burgers is back in Portsmouth

'It’s good to be home,' owner says

PORTSMOUTH — After seven years in Middletown, Boss Man Burgers is back where it belongs, owner Jason Peters said.

“It feels great to come back to Portsmouth. It’s been my home for the last 30 years,” Mr. Peters said during the restaurant’s grand opening celebration Friday night at its new home: 1965 East Main Road, right next door to Ferreira’s Package Store.

Boss Man started seven years ago, serving burgers out of the Patriot Petroleum gas station further north on East Main Road. After it made a name for itself, Mr. Peters moved it to larger quarters in Middletown, near Frosty Freez.

“I shouldn’t have moved to Middletown; I should have just stayed with my roots. It was a lot of up and downs in Middletown,” Mr. Peters said.

The new spot has a different look than the Middletown location, with only a few seats for dining in.

“This is more my speed,” he said. “It’s more takeout, delivery, catering. Me and Chris (Schneider, the kitchen manager) have a lot of catering experience; we were at Blackstone Catering for 25 years.”

Other than that, however, you can expect the same offerings at the New Boss Man.

“It’s the same menu — mac and cheese, build-your-own burger,” said Mr. Peters. “Ninety-five percent of the stuff we serve we make, so it’s not just opening a bag. We make our own veggie burgers, chili, marinara, soups, onion rings, mozzarella bites, fried pickles.”

The restaurant doesn’t have a liquor license yet, but intends to get one so it can serve beer and wine as it did in Middletown.

Mr. Peters said he’s happy that things turned out the way they did.

“It’s good to be home. It’s been a lot of work, but well worth it,” he said.
