Bristol Athletic Hall of Fame announces 2016 class

The Bristol Athletic Hall of Fame recently announced its 2016 class, which will be inducted Nov. 26.

The inductees include:

Seth Braun has played baseball since T-ball, playing through Legion ball. Playing for Mt. Hope High School, Seth earned 3rd Division Class B East in 1993 and 1st Division Class B East in 1994.

Christian Brown was a captain of the 1993 Division 1A State Champion Mt. Hope soccer team, earning All Division honors twice. He participated in the MetLife All Star game, was on the 1992 Rhode Island State Select Olympic Development soccer team and the Providence United Soccer team that toured Portugal. He was chosen to play soccer at the first World Scholar Athlete Games in 1993. Christian was also on the 1994 Mt. Hope and 1992 Bristol High School Class C State champion basketball teams.

Jennifer Cavallaro participated in soccer and cheerleading, participated in the Hershey Track and Field program in Massachusetts, played high school volleyball and ran cross country. She received a leadership award in cross country, she made All Division as a sophomore, junior and senior, and qualified for the New England Meet held in Vermont. She went on to run at Rhode Island College. 

Salvador Corona, as a junior at Warren High School, earned First Team All Division for Division 2 South, and was a starter on the 1993 Class C champion basketball team. As a senior, Sal was on the state champion soccer team,  earning All-Tournament and All State for his play. That winter, Sal was named captain of the basketball team that went on to become co-champions of Class C for the regular season and playoff champs, earned Sal Playoff MVP honors. Sal went on to play four years of soccer for Stonehill College. He has coached freshman soccer at Barrington High School, and was inducted into the Warren Athletic Fame in 2010.

Jeffrey Grifka was All Division as a senior and was on two state championship basketball teams, for Bristol and Mt. Hope. Jeff was named All Division twice in football and baseball. Jeff went on to play two years of basketball at Dean College and has coached at the middle school and high school level in golf and basketball. He currently coaches at Kickemuit Middle School and has led them to the playoffs twice. 

Jodi Kopecky played soccer, basketball and softball in high school, earning First Team All Division Honors six times, playing on two championship teams, and being named MVP in the 1993 Class C Basketball Tournament. Jodi played basketball and softball at Salve Regina University where she earned 1st team Commonwealth Coast Conference Honors in softball. Jodi was named Athlete of the Year at Mt Hope in 1994 and was inducted into the Warren Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.

Jennifer Biancuzzo Lewis started playing soccer as a freshman in high school and was named captain in 1993. She was also on the gymnastics team, and was named 1st Team All Division in 1992, and 2nd Team All Division in 1991 and 1993. She was a member of the RI National High School Gymnastics Team in 1994. Jennifer went on to Rensselaer Polytechnic  Institute where she played on the JV soccer team in 1994 and was a member of the Rugby Club from 1995 – 1998. 

James McMann was a member of the Class C Championship basketball team at Warren High School and the 1994 Mt. Hope Championship team. James earned 2nd Team All Division honors for baseball in 1993 and 1st team All Division honors for basketball in 1994, as well as making the 1st Team All-Tournament team. 

Bradley Oliver made 2nd team All Division as a football defensive end in 1993, and 2nd Team All Division as a safety in 1994. He really shined as a wrestler, where he was youth state champion three times, and Eastern New England youth champion three times. He was the RI junior high school state champion and the RI Freshman State Champion. Brad earned All Division and All-State four times, and All American three times. He was state champion in 1991, 93 and 94. 

Jason Prenda played freshman football at the high school and wrestled, winning the Freshman State Championship in his weight class. He obtained third place in the varsity states after he suffered a broken clavicle in his first match. 

Julie Principe was named captain for both her soccer and softball teams at the high school level, where she was a four-year varsity athlete. Julie was named 2nd Team All Division in soccer, and 1st Team All Division, 2nd Team All State in softball. Julie was named Most Athletic for the class of 1994.

Joseph Ramos made the All-State Tennis team in 1992, 1993 and 1994, before playing four years at Rhode Island College, earning MVP Honors in 1998. Joe also was the men’s singles champion in the 2010 Bristol Fourth of July Tennis Tournament. 

Matthew Travers played soccer and baseball in high school, earning 2nd Team All Division in baseball, and 1st team all division for soccer. He also played in the first World Scholar Athlete Games. Matt went on to play soccer at Springfield College for two years. 

Paul Vollaro, Jr. played soccer and hockey in high school and was named 2nd Team All State in 1993. He made the All-Tournament Team for the playoffs and won the Larry Briggs Award as MVP of the soccer finals for the state champion Huskies that year. Paul went on to play soccer at Roger Williams’s University, where he was a four-year starter at striker and midfield. In 1994 he was named the Commonwealth Coast Conference “Rookie of the Year” and 2nd Team All-Conference. In 1995 and 96, he was named to the All-Conference 1st team. All-time, Paul ranks fifth in points, fifth in goals, fourth in assists, second in shots attempted, and seventh for game winning goals.

Michael Iacovelli received the leadership award for soccer at Bishop Connelly High School in 1991, was named best offensive player in 1991, and was given an All Scholastic Award by the Herald News of Fall River. Michael was named to the First Team All – Bristol County Sports in 1991, and received an all star award by the Eastern Athletic Conference in 1990 and 1991.

Melissa Iacovelli Treeman played on the first Bishop Connolly soccer team and played basketball and softball, earning All State three times. Melissa was named MVP while at Connolly. Melissa went on to play soccer at RWU, was named to the Commonwealth Coast Conference First Team as a junior, and was the team’s Offensive Most Valuable Player. Melissa was named to the RWU All-Tournament team after leading the Hawks to the tournament win. Despite only playing 2 seasons, Melissa was the program’s leading scorer through its first seven years. She ranks ninth in career points, 10th in goals, and sixth in assists at RWU.
