Bristol Police: Stoned driver, coffee theft and more

The Bristol Police Department responded to the following calls between Dec. 19 and Dec. 25:

Monday, Dec. 19

A caller complained of someone hunting off a boat in the area of Poppasquash Road around 8 a.m. Police investigated, finding the boater was fishing and was within legal limits.

There was a small water main break reported on Peck Avenue just after 4 p.m. The Bristol County Water Authority responded.

Tuesday, Dec. 20

A man driving a white Toyota was smoking marijuana as he drove down Metacom Avenue at 3:30 p.m., according to another driver who spotted him and called police. The car was last seen heading northbound on Metacom near Gooding Avenue, but police were unable to find it.

A resident on Scott Lane called police to complain about a dog barking in the neighborhood at 6:30 p.m. The complaint was unfounded.

Wednesday, Dec. 21

A caller reported seeing a car speeding down Metacom Avenue at midnight with a possibly drunk driver behind the wheel. Officers pulled the car over near Evelyn Drive. The driver was sober.

The resident on Scott Lane called about a barking dog again, this time at 1:30 a.m. Again, the complaint was unfounded.

Two men and a woman stole a T-short and a pound of coffee from the Dunkin’ Donuts on Metacom Avenue just after 1 p.m. The store manager followed the shoplifters to the East Bay Food Pantry, where they paid for the items and police issued them a no trespass order.

Items were reportedly stolen from a retailer on Hope Street around 4:30 p.m. Police are investigating.

Thursday, Dec. 22

A resident on Monkey Wrench Lane reported a suspicious car at the end of her driveway just before 8 a.m. There was no problem; the driver was working in the area.

A caller reported three people were sleeping in a car on Hope Street at 12:30 p.m. There was nothing suspicious; they were waiting for a friend who was getting a hair cut nearby.

A resident on Opechee Drive reported hearing an explosion before her shed caught on fire. Bristol firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze.

Friday, Dec. 23

Reports of stolen packages on Bradford Street proved unfounded when the owner learned the packages had not been delivered.

A man reportedly walking on the Mt. Hope Bridge — where pedestrians are not allowed — turned out to be a bridge worker.

A patrolman spotted a potentially reckless driver on Metacom Avenue just before 10 p.m. The officer followed the man to his home, learning the driver has an unspecified health issue, but refused medical treatment. No citation was issued.

Saturday, Dec. 24

A caller on Bay View Avenue reported a group of intoxicated people was walking through back yards in the neighborhood at 2:30 a.m. 

Another Bay View Avenue resident reported excessive construction noise in the area at 8 a.m. Police advised the offending party of the town’s noise ordinance. No citation was issued.

Sunday, Dec. 25

Police assisted with a child custody dispute on Constitution Street just before 1 p.m.
