CLCF football wins two titles

The Cranston Herald ·

It was a big week for the CLCF football program, capturing a pair of state titles at the 10U and 13U levels in impressive fashion.

The 10U group captured its first crown with a 14-0 shutout of the Fall River Falcons in the Blackstone Valley AYF Super Bowl, concluding the season with an unblemished 11-0 record.

Quarterback Jayden Falcone was the star of the game on the offensive side of the ball, finding Zach Decorpo for a 20-yard touchdown, before rushing in on a 65-yard keeper to make it 14-0 with an insurance score. Stephen Antonucci converted on both extra point tries.

The defense was outstanding in the win, as well, as Fall River struggled to string anything together on offense.

Being in the Super Bowl wasn’t anything new for the 13U squad. It made it to the final game for the sixth straight season, and the 21-0 victory over Fall River marked the group’s fourth state title over that six-year span.

CLCF’s defense set the tone early with a safety, as defensive end Ray Simmons got to the quarterback for a sack in the end zone to make it 2-0.

Quarterback Michael Grenier then found Kris Degatis for a 10-yard touchdown pass, before the defense went back to work with a pick-six from safety Brennan Stetson, pushing the lead out to 14-0.

Chris Carbone put the game away late with a short rushing touchdown.

CLCF 13U head coach Bryan Stetson was proud of his team for battling through and emerging victorious against a physical Fall River squad.

“Fall River was arguably the hardest hitting team they've faced all season, but our boys really manned up and took the fight to Fall River,” Bryan Stetson said. “We had lost earlier in the season to Johnston and that really woke us up. We were able to get our redemption against Johnston in the semifinals, 18-0, and carried that momentum over into the Super Bowl.”

Both teams will play the Connecticut state champion on Sunday at Durfee High School.

The 10U team will face off against the Meriden Raiders at 10 a.m., and the 13U state champs will take on the Norwalk Packers at 4 p.m.
