Highlights of the decisions made and items discussed at the Johnston Town Council Meeting on Tuesday, November 14.

Awards and Recognition

Peter Fontaine of the Johnston Sun Rise was presented a commendation by Councilman Robert Civetti for being inducted into the Johnston Athletic Hall of Fame.

Emma Salzillo was presented a citation from Councilman Richard DelFino for becoming Miss Pre-Teen US Italia.

Licenses

S & I Landscaping and Construction Service, located at 165 Greenville Avenue, was granted a business license for phone calls only.

A second hand dealers license for the sale of new and use merchandise was approved for Aram Productions, LLC, doing business as Midway Antiques and Collectibles.

Located at 1227 Atwood Avenue, Kimberly’s Hair Design was approved for a hair salon license.

A transfer of a business operating license was permitted for the New B D Mart doing business as Gulf Express located at 1180 Atwood Avenue.

Madash Salon, located at 152 Putnam Pike, was granted a business operating license including holiday sales.

New Tobacco Licenses were approved for the following businesses: Amazing Express, Cumberland Farms on Hartford Avenue and Killingly Street, Greenville Avenue Citgo Food Mart, New BD Mart, Johnston Fine Wine Beer and Spirits, Knights Liquor Warehouse, Pick-n-Pay, Tobacco King Lounge, Tri-Town Wine and Spirits, Walgreen’s locations on Atwood Avenue, Putnam Pike, and Plainfield Street.

A business operating license change of address for Sensei Fitness, located at 1395 Atwood Avenue, Suite 102, a private fitness studio, was approved.

A restaurant license for the sale of sandwiches, prepared food and cold cuts was granted to Father and Son Italian Deli at 915 Atwood Avenue.

Chuck and Sons Towing, located at 36 George Waterman Road, had their request for a business operating license for towing and storage of motor vehicles approved.

Greenville Bakery was granted a restaurant license that includes holiday sales for their location at 269 Greenville Avenue.

Threading Studio, at 1395 Atwood Avenue, Suite 105, an eyebrow and face threading and Henna Tattoo studio, was approved for a a business license.

An auto rental license was granted for Gold Star Auto and Truck Rentals, LLC, located at 577 Killingly Street. This was an expansion of an existing license to add vehicle rentals.

JMLVP, LLC, doing business as Exit Realty Professionals at 1304 Atwood Avenue, was approved for a business operating license for a real estate office.

Juliana’s Bakery’s business license request, imcluding holiday sales, for their location at 1551 Plainfield Pike was approved.

Liquor Licensing Commission

The renewal of all liquor and entertainment license for 2017-2018 was approved subject to all taxes being paid.

Constituent Requests

District 1 Councilman Richard J. DelFino request a traffic study for the intersection of Miller Circle and Simons Street. He asked for a speed enforcement detail for Regina Drive and Simmonsville Avenue. Delfino asked for a letter to be sent to the Department of Transportation regarding the expansion joints at exit 5 of Route 295, which are loose. He requested a letter be sent to National Grid for a tree to be cut next to 24 Joy Street, which is blocking a light. He requested potholes be filled on Joy Street.

Councilman Robert Civetti of District 5 asked about stops signs being placed in the area of Oak Tree, Butler, and Steere Drive following a traffic study and their status. He asked that the DPW check Barnes Avenue in regards to an exposed pipe in the road. He also requested grass being cut near 31 Selina before the winter.

New Business

Richard Lobello was appointed to the Zoning Board to fill the vacated position of Russell Campinelli.

Robert Giudici was reappointed to the Johnston Housing Authority.

A resolution authorizing the mayor to enter into a lease agreement, and memorandum and notice of lease between the town and Southern Sky Renewable Energy (SSRE), and also a consent agreement between the town, Seminole Funding Resources and SSRE to construct and operate a solar voltaic system on assessor’s plot 32, lot 32, was approved.

Resolution 2017-45, assigning an address for the new Citizens Bank Campus Headquarters was ratified.

A resolution awarding the bid and authorizing the purchase of a large format printer and scanner package for large maps was approved.

A petition for a speed hump at 7 Johnston Avenue was referred to the Fire and Police Departments, along with the Department of Public Works.

Show Cause

A show cause hearing for Ocean State Environmental Co., located at 51 Green Hill Road, was held to revoke the business license of the company due to delinquent tangible taxes of $4,592.49. A request was made that the police department and the DPW know that the license had been revoked and that there should be no business activity at the location.
