Dog saved from Westport farm ready for adoption

WESTPORT, Mass. (WPRI) — Two of the dogs rescued from the filthy conditions at a Westport farm are getting ready to find their forever home.

The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said the dogs in question thankfully do not seem to have any physical injuries – but mentally, it’s been a tough challenge for them because they haven’t been socialized at all until now.

Betulah and her friend Victoria are both 3-year-old purebred Portuguese Podengos. The pair is currently recovering from eye-opening conditions.

“[They] came from this death camp sort of situation in Westport,” said Dr. EJ Finnicchio of the RISPCA.

Last month, hundreds of animals were found living in squalid conditions on a 70-acre farm off of American Legion Highway. The farm was divided into more than 20 lots that were sublet.

“There was suffering…pain,” said Finnicchio. “There were criminal acts being committed there.”

Betulah and Victoria were both recovered from the site. They are shy separately but playful when together, the RISPCA says.

“Very shy, very timid. They’re starting to come out of their shells – some progressing more than others,” Dr. Finnicchio said.

Betulah is up for adoption now at the RISPCA and Victoria is getting closer to being ready to go out into the world, too.
