Locals already know it, but now it’s official: Downtown Warren really is a great neighborhood.

The American Planning Association has named Warren as one the United States' five greatest neighborhoods for 2016. It beat out nominations from 35 other states for the honor, and as a result is included in the association’s “Great Places” report, just released this week. It includes listings of the nation’s greatest neighborhoods, public places and streets.

Warren joins four other great neighborhoods on the list, including Downtown Santa Ana, Calif., Midtown Atlanta, Ga., Old Louisville in Louisville, Ky., and the Nob Hill neighborhood of Albuquerque, N.M.

Like the other winners, the town boasts an eclectic downtown, innovative businesses and involved and passionate residents. What’s more, the report notes that Warren is planning its future wisely and is growing into a vibrant, hip and productive place that capitalizes well on its resources:

“The eco-haven of downtown Warren is ideal for bikers and foodies alike,” the report reads.

“The tiny downtown area and its highly involved community have set the green standard for active living, while local foods have set the stage for a story of urban renewal.”

Warren was nominated for the honor by Town Planner Kate Michaud. The former Tiverton town planner started here in February and submitted Warren for consideration a month later.

“I already knew Warren was a great up and coming place,” she said. “That’s why I came here. This was a great opportunity to let others know.

The report lauds Warren’s businesses, nautical heritage, Native American history, historical architecture, diverse population and committed, connected residents, and also singles the town out for its commitment to betterment through planning. Mention is made of Hope & Main and the town’s growing food culture, the Historic District Commission, the vibrant arts scene and the town’s many festivals and celebrations.

The report also cites the town’s ongoing Comprehensive Community Plan update, feasibility study for the National Grid corridor trail system, and the upcoming construction of a public boardwalk behind the Tourister Mill property.

Warren Town Council president Joseph DePasquale said the report is particularly special because it congratulations Warren for heading in the right direction through careful planning.

“It’s great,” he said.

“We’ve worked really hard and we’re trying to make the town a better more vibrant community.”

“It’s a real place,” Ms. Michaud added. “It’s not one of those cookie cutter communities, where everything is planned. It’s very organic.”

Representatives from the American Planning Association are expected to be here later this month to celebrate the honor. Ms. Michaud said an event will be held at the Jefferson Street Armory, and if the weather’s nice enough the town may shut down the street and do it outside. After that, a tour of some of the downtown area’s most important properties is in the works.
