East grad shares online dating disasters in debut book

The Cranston Herald ·

Alison O'Donnell never intended to be an author. Or, an on-line dating expert, but when she realized she had collected almost 100 dating debacles she knew she had a best seller on her hands.

Stupid Cupid tells the story of each guy she dated, and how well(?) it went.

The book took two years to write, but it was 32 years in the making. And, she already is taking notes and planning the next one.

O'Donnell attended St. Paul's, Dutemple Elementary, Park View and Cranston East. She graduated from CCRI and RIC. She is an English teacher by day and a stand up comedienne by night.

"When I was four years old, I remember my mother asking me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I told her a comedienne; she said 'no, ladies don't do that'. Then I suggested a singer she again said no, there was no money to be made, finally I gave up and said well, I like to push buttons, maybe I'll be a cashier? I am glad I didn't follow that career path," she laughed.

O'Donnell is excited to see if any of the guys recognize themselves and what their reactions will be.

"None of the men in the book had a second date. These stories are all told from my perspective. I wrote it as if I was sitting with you having a drink and recalling my experience(s)," she said.

While O'Donnell herself has sworn off the online dating scene, she encourages others to give it a try.

"I have seen it work for other people, so, I know it can happen. But, people have to follow the rules, they are there for a reason," she said.
