EAST PROVIDENCE — East Providence High School will be closed Monday, March 6, in a show of respect following the death of esteemed staff member Geoffrey Higginbotham.

Mr. Higginbotham, 34, passed away this week as a result of his life-long battle against cystic fibrosis. An English teacher at EPHS, he courageously fought the disease, which is a genetic disorder that most often affects the lungs.

“We are all deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved colleague Geoff. Geoff has left a lasting impression on so many of us,” said EPHS principal Shani Wallace. “He will be remembered by all for his genuinely kind soul, his personal strength, his passion to enjoy life and love for all those around him.”

Mr. Higginbotham endured three lung transplants throughout his life, the last occurring in 2008. At the time, he was believed to be first United States resident to have ever had the procedure that number of times and survived.

Calling hours for Mr. Higginbotham are Sunday, March 5, from 3 to 7 p.m. at W.R. Watson Funeral, 350 Willett Ave., Riverside. A Mass of Christian Burial takes place Monday, March 6, at St. Luke's Church, 108 Washington Road, Barrington, at 10 a.m.
