East Side Realty: Period Architecture

A contemporary home maintaining a luxurious feel

East Side Monthly Magazine ·

Tucked away at the confluence of Blackstone Boulevard and Butler Avenue is an architectural gem: the Leonard Levin House, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.

This Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired house was designed by RISD-educated Domenic Thomas Rusillo in 1955. While the west side of the house faces Blackstone, the expansive grounds and gorgeous landscaping are largely hidden from public view.

The single-family home comprises three asymmetrical rectangular blocks, which join together to create the living space – but the interior, rich with lush wooden details, is anything but stiff. Inside each of the contemporary bedrooms is a full bathroom with a whirlpool. The exterior features a flat roof with stone veneer on the first floor and horizontal board and batten siding on the second. The living room features an entire wall of glass doors that open to the shaded, private back yard. A patio on the second floor does the same.

The Levin house is a gorgeous example of how period architecture can remain contemporary – not to mention comfortably luxurious – for generations.
