Edmund L. Alves of Bristol, RI passed away on October 27, 2016. He was three weeks and three days shy of reaching the ripe old age of 90. We think he did it on purpose so everyone will always be talking about him-“If he could have just made it to 90! Wouldn’t that have been something?”

He was the son of the late Mariano and Helena (Garaffa) Alves and the beloved husband of Maretta (LaFazia) Berry. Edmund was predeceased by his first wife of 54 years, Georgina (DaPonte) Alves.

Edmund was a member of the Bristol Rod & Gun Club. He loved to fish and was a part of of a crew that once caught a tuna “this big.” He excelled at growing vegetables larger than those of his neighbors and one of his zucchinis could feed an entire family for a week. He enjoyed travelling, good food, and great wine.

Edmund leaves behind many friends and family including: his loving daughters- Patricia Vincent, along with her husband David and Elaine Merryman, along with her husband Tony; five grandchildren- Jodi Merryman, Anthony Merryman, Shannon Carmo, David Vincent, and Wendy Vincent, along with her husband Peter Shoesmith.

He was also blessed with five great-grandchildren: Justin Carmo; Abigail and Harrison Shoesmith; and Alex and Andrew Barowy.

Two brothers Joseph L. Alves of Bristol and Mariano “Babe” Alves (his wife, Hazel Alves) of Oklahoma and brother-in-law Seraphin “Fee” DaPonte (his wife, Marjorie DaPonte) survive him. A brother, John Alves and a sister, Edith Medeiros, preceded him in death.

A Celebration of Life mass was held on October 31 at St. Mary’s Church in Bristol. Edmund was interred in North Burial Ground in Bristol alongside his first wife, Georgina.
