Falcons come up just short against Patriots

The Cranston Herald ·

The Cranston West girls’ soccer team battled back from a two-goal, halftime deficit on Friday in its season opener against defending state champion Portsmouth, before Annie Marshall netted the deciding goal with five minutes left to lift the Patriots to a 3-2 victory.

Tallies from Hannah Baronian and Sarah Nolan in the opening half gave Portsmouth a commanding, 2-0 lead heading into the break.

But, with its back against the wall, West was able to mount a comeback.

Goals from Abby Turchetta and Katie Blake knotted the score at 2. However, with the two teams inching close to overtime, Marshall decided the game before it got to that point, firing home the game-winner to make it a 3-2 final.

Heather DiFazio added an assist for the Falcons, and Julia Perreault made two stops in net.

West was set to take on North Kingstown on Tuesday, but results were unavailable at press time. The Falcons will also be at home at the Hope Road Complex for Friday’s matchup with the Eagles of Barrington High School at 3:30 p.m.
