PORTSMOUTH — Senior goalkeeper Will Swart usually helps the Portsmouth Patriots boys’ soccer team win games by making sure the ball doesn’t get past him.

On Wednesday night, he did that and more.

Playing against Cumberland in the first round of the Division-I state tournament, Swart made diving saves during an overtime shootout, then got on the other side of the ball to boot in the game-winner.

It was the first time he had ever attempted a penalty kick, and this one won the shootout for Portsmouth, 5-3, and the game.

The sixth-seeded Patriots advance to play Bishop Hendricken, the No. 3 seed, on the road Saturday afternoon.

Portsmouth played the Clippers, the No. 11 seed, to a 1-1 tie after regulation. Cumberland scored first at about the 10-minute mark, but Portsmouth answered back when a throw-in by John Stack in front of the Cumberland goal was headed in by senior Jack Cavanagh.

In the shootout, the five Portsmouth goals were scored by Liam Callahan, Andrew Maiato, Christian McNeilly, Cavanagh and Swart.
