Goglia scores 100th goal as Mt. Hope tops Smithfield 2-0

Huskies' semifinal contest scheduled for next Thursday, Nov. 10

Senior co-captain Michaela Goglia scored the 100th goal of her high school career as the Mt. Hope Huskies opened the playoffs with a 2-0 quarterfinal win over the Smithfield Sentinels Friday night in Bristol.

The 15-1 regular season Huskies, who had earned a first-round bye, shut out their opponent for only the third time this season. Jenna Cimbron started the scoring 14 minutes in, tipping the ball into the Sentinels’ net after a corner kick from co-captain Olivia Cairrao. Goglia put the game away nearly an hour later, when she scored with 14 minutes left.

The shutout came amid a relentless Huskies defense and swarming midfield presence that kept the Sentinels off-balance for much of the contest. The ball rarely strayed into Mt. Hope territory during the first half and while the Sentinels were able to open up the field in the second, they were unable to get quality shots on the Mt. Hope goal. Still, the game remained a nail-biter, with numerous missed scoring opportunities for the Huskies, until Goglia’s insurance goal.

“I think we had 100 opportunities” to score, coach Kerri Ferreira said later.

After the game, Coach Ferreira congratulated her team on a hard-fought victory.

“That is how you play,” she said: “Like you are the Number One team in the state. Defensively, you killed it.”

After the game, Ms. Ferreira and Mt. Hope High School athletic director Christy Belisle presented Goglia with a ball in recognition of her 100th goal. The senior forward is the first Mt. Hope High School athlete in 10 years to join the 100-point club.

Mt. Hope was originally scheduled to play the winner of the LaSalle-North Kingstown quarterfinal game next Tuesday, but the semifinal match has been rescheduled to Thursday, Nov. 10, due to Tuesday’s election.
