‘Heartwarming’ Christmas event helps families in need

Christmas is going to be a lot merrier for a number of local families this year thanks, in part, to the efforts of the Bristol Volunteer Fire Department’s Ladies’ Auxiliary and the East Bay Food Pantry.

Together, they helped collect a large number of toys and clothes, and 380 pounds of food at the group’s Kickoff to Christmas Community Aid Drive Saturday night at Jacky’s Galaxie. The place was filled to capacity with an even larger crowd than attended last year’s first event at Judge Roy Bean’s.

“It was so heartwarming to see the number of people who came here to help others less fortunate. It was awesome,” said event founder and Chairwoman Jennifer Mancieri. “The event was very successful. We had an amazing turnout for such a great cause and I can't thank everyone enough. Most importantly, we again were able to collect an amazingly large amount of toys, clothes, and nonperishable food items, as well as raise $900 for the Ladies Auxiliary Community Aid Fund and Scholarship Fund.”

Ms. Mancieri credited Ladies Auxiliary President Melanie Wolfe and community aid member Rena Thurston for their dedication and hours of work putting the event together, as well as the efforts of the Fire Department and other volunteers who helped spur donations from the community.

“We are all blessed to live in such an amazing community where everyone pulls together to help others in need,” Ms. Mancieri said. “I am sure because of everyone's wonderful donations, these children will have a memorable Christmas.”

One fire department member present was Ken Bloomer of the Hydes Fire Company, who arrived early to start collecting donations.

“I’ve been out here for only 20 minutes or so, and already we’ve filled one huge box,” he said. “It looks like we’re going to have a big night.” 

He was right. There was a little something for everyone Saturday, including a balloon artist, face painting, arts and crafts, Christmas Carols sung by members of the Bristol Theater Co., and of course, a much-anticipated appearance by Santa (Michael Rielly) himself. Entertainment for the evening featured local brothers Tyler and Ryan Falcoa and rock group Gravity. They had the place jumping all night long.

“They were wonderful,” said Ms. Mancieri. “They added so much to this event.”

Beyond the entertainment, the true reason for the event was to help area families who need a little assistance during the holidays. By that measure, the event was a smashing success, according to East Bay Food Pantry Executive director Nicki Ann Tyska.

"East Bay Food Pantry received over 400 toys, 380 pounds of food and a number of warm winter clothing,” Ms. Tyska said. “We are so appreciative to the Women's Auxiliary for being a part of our Christmas for kids program. We couldn't do it without their support and the generosity of the community."

Toys are still being collected and can be dropped off at the food pantry, 150 Franklin St., through Saturday, Dec. 10.
