Historical Society holding weekend yard sale

Johnston Sun Rise ·

If you like big bargains and have some spare cash, the Johnston Historical Society has a shopping opportunity for you.

The society will have an old-fashioned yard sale on Saturday, Oct. 15, at the one-time Log Gift & Curtain Shoppe located at 2737 Hartford Ave.

People will also remember the location as the one-time Shang Bailey Roadhouse in Johnston’s ever-growing West End.

This yard sale, though, may be entirely different than those of years past.

“We’ve got all kinds of items,” said Anthony Ursillo, a society board member, who is chairing Saturday’s yard sale. “All the stuff we’ll have on Saturday is the result of a recent house cleaning.”

Ursillo, who is also known for coordinating events for the society, said there will be “lamps, furniture, barstools, pictures, even Christmas items. If you need pots and pans, we’ll have them on Saturday.”

Ursillo noted the sale will be cash only. There will be plenty of free parking. The sale begins at 8 a.m., and no earlier.

The Johnston Historical Society has been in existence since 1984 and ranks among the most active groups of its kind in Rhode Island. Among its properties is the Elijah Angell House, located at 101 Putnam Pike in Johnston adjacent to its Museum Barn, where monthly meetings are held on the last Wednesday evening of each month and other fundraising events are held throughout the year.

People who are interested in history are urged to become a member of the society. Ursillo said individual memberships are $20, and family memberships are $30.

“We always have an interesting speaker at our monthly meetings,” he said. “At our next meeting [on Oct. 26], David Robinson, an underwater archaeologist from the University of Rhode Island, who will discuss the many shipwrecks and floating dry-dock remains he’s identified on Green Jacket Shoal.” Robinson will also touch on other topics.

The Museum Barn is open Monday nights – except holidays – from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Fridays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
