Ice can be nice

Warwick Beacon ·

With temperatures dipping below zero and hardly climbing out of the teens for the past week, area ponds transformed into hockey rinks and just great places to be outside and enjoying the thrill – along with a few chills – of winter. Second Time Sports at 453 Atwood Ave. in Cranston was jamming last week as people bought skates or had them sharpened. Christian Kuiawa helps his daughter Audrey try on a pair of skates as his son, Charlie, looks on. Warwick residents, they planned to skate on a pond near Squantum Drive where the pickup hockey game, above, was pictured. Sharpening the blades is Anthony Sawaia, who estimated he did 100 pairs of skates on Friday alone. (Warwick Beacon photos)
