In Portsmouth: 4 deer struck by cars in 5-day period

PORTSMOUTH — Here are some highlights from the Portsmouth Police reports from over the past week.

Monday, Oct. 24

Sonja M. Crespo, 40, of 36 Statue Way, was charged at 6:18 p.m. with domestic asault and domestic vandalism with malicious injury to property. A 35-year-old Portsmouth man told police that Ms. Crespo had grabbed and pushed his feet and legs off a couch and threw his laptop on the floor during an argument.

Police investigated a report than a town-owned storage building at Melville Campground had been vandalized. The complainant said that on Oct. 22, he noticed a padlock had been broken off a side door of a shed, allowing someone to gain entry. Once inside, a metal exhaust pipe was removed from a wood-burning stove and was discarded in the wooded area just outside, police were told. 

Tuesday, Oct. 25

Susan M. Levesque Littlefield, 38, of 92 Douglas Ave., was charged with violating a town ordinance after her dog, which police said was not licensed, allegedly ran at large and bit a child. The charges stem from a complaint filed on Oct. 11, when a resident told police the dog was constantly loose at Hathaway School and had nipped her child’s leg that morning on the way to school.

Wednesday, Oct. 26

Paulo A. Furtado, 40, of 8 Saint Elizabeth St., Apt. 2, Bristol, was charged at 6:18 p.m. with driving while intoxicated (first offense). His car was stopped in the area of Boyd’s Lane and the Route 24 North on-ramp for speeding and crossing over the double yellow lines, police said.

Thursday, Oct. 27

A car driven by Robert Defreitas of East Providence left Route 24 North and entered the woods at Cedar Island, where it was found overturned around 2:30 p.m. Mr. Defreitas told police he swerved to avoid hitting another car that had suddenly entered his lane of travel. He managed to exit the overturned car through a passenger side door before Portsmouth rescue workers arrived.

Friday, Oct. 28

A car driven by Jeffrey Heath of Portsmouth struck and killed a deer that had darted out onto West Main Road near the town line around 8:30 a.m. The car sustained heavy damage to its front end.

Saturday, Oct. 29

Robert Martins, 39, of 237 Field St., Fall River, was charged just before 2 a.m. with driving while intoxicated (first offense) and refusal to submit to a chemical test. Police said his vehicle was pulled over on West Main Road, near King’s Grant, because it had drifted out of the lane of travel.

Ronald C. Stoller, 39, of no permanent address, was charged at 4 p.m. on a bench warrant issued from 2nd District Court. An officer with knowledge of the warrant observed Mr. Stoller riding his bicycle on Anthony Road.

A car driven by Doreen Sequeira of Dartmouth struck and killed a deer on Route 24 South at Sunny Acres shortly before 6 p.m. The car sustained heavy front-end damage and was towed from the scene.

Sunday, Oct. 30

Kelly D. Richardson, 34, of 508 Turnpike Ave., was charged shortly before 4 p.m. with domestic assault and domestic vandalism with malicious injury to property. Police said Ms. Richardson assaulted a 48-year-old Portsmouth man who was found to have numerous scratches and injuries on his arms and chest. The interior of the home was in disarray due to Ms. Richardson breaking numerous items, according to police.

Monday, Oct. 31

Justice S. Antone, 20, of 5 Mulberry Road, Fall River, was charged at 1:28 a.m. on a bench warrant issued by 2nd District Court. Police pulled his car over on West Main Road because it had an obstructed license plate.

Two cars ran over and killed a deer while traveling south on West Main Road near Turkey Hill around 9 p.m. The drivers, John Cote of Seekonk and Shelby Beeghly of Newport, were not injured. The Cote vehicle, which was in front, sustained heavy front-end damage and had to be towed from the scene.

Tuesday, Nov. 1

A car driven by Jordan Furtado of Warren struck a deer on East Main Road at Bramans Lane. The driver and a passenger were not injured and the deer ran off after the accident, police said. The car sustained damage to its front right fender but was otherwise functional.
