Johnston breast cancer survivor rocked the runway

The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation once again put a Kentucky Derby spin on its 9th Annual “Our Heroes” Survivor Fashion Show, themed “A Night at the Races,” on Saturday at the Pawtucket Armory Arts Center.

From fancy derby hats and raffles to breast cancer survivors and their families rocking the runway in the latest fashions, the event was sold out with approximately 400 guests.

Participating in this year’s show was Pat Andrews, 69, of Johnston. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, and had a partial mastectomy. Her daughter, Christina, also battled breast cancer and survived. Married to George Andrews, they have two additional other children, Nicole and George, Jr.

“I was nervous,” said Andrews the day after the Fashion Show. “I was also relieved. It was a lot of fun last night.” Andrews was escorted down the runway with her husband, George.

Fashions were provided by Botticelli, Generous Clothing for the Curvaceous Woman, Sonya’s Clothing, Carl Anthony Tuxedo, Franklin Rogers LTD and Off Broadway Shoes. The models were women living with breast cancer as well as families and supporters. The event also included a seated dinner and musical entertainment.

The evening included dinner, prizes, raffles, and a derby hat contest. The Emcee’s were Michaela Johnson and Will Gilbert of The Rhode Show.

The Fashion Show included 20 models total with 13 models who are breast cancer survivors and 7 models that were made up of community supporters, including volunteers and social workers.

“I was fortunate to have a loving husband and supportive family,” said Andrews. “I also can’t say enough about the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Foundation where I also found a lot of support through my journey. Last night was a wonderful experience.”
