Johnston eyes first win against Kilties

The Johnston football team will aim for its first Division II win of the year this Friday on the road at Mt. Pleasant.

The Kilties had a difficult start to the campaign after allowing Pilgrim to come back in the final minute of a 28-22 loss at home. Westerly crushed them, 49-6, the next week before a 19-0 shutout at the hands of West Warwick.

Johnston has endured a similar beginning. The Panthers have suffered non-league losses to Division I Woonsocket (20-6) and Cranston West (42-20), as well as Division II foes West Warwick (55-16) and Moses Brown (35-0).

Both sides are without a win on the season, but the Panthers have made close runs at a couple of D-I squads. They even held a two-possession lead on the Falcons at one point in their contest.

The game kicks off at 6 p.m. on Friday at Conley Stadium.

Girls’ soccer looks to stay undefeated

Bianca Robbins and the Johnston girls’ soccer team (6-0-0) will tangle with Central Falls at home on Monday evening.

Johnston faced off with Central (2-1-1) on Wednesday evening, but results were unavailable at press time. Should it get past the Knights, the Panthers will look to preserve its sterling record against the Warriors (3-2-2).

The Warriors have only taken losses from undefeated East Providence and Tolman, so they can provide a tough test for Johnston.

The matchup begins at Johnston High School at 6 p.m.

Boys’ soccer to host PCD

After a thrilling 1-0 victory over North Providence on Monday, the Johnston boys’ soccer club (3-3-2) is trying to foster momentum as the stretch run looms.

Following a contest with Blackstone Valley Prep on Wednesday, Johnston hosts Providence Country Day (4-4-1) on Friday at 5:15 p.m.

The Knights had won three in a row heading into a Wednesday matchup with Tiverton.

Girls’ volleyball heads to Central Monday

The Johnston girls’ volleyball team will look to gain some ground on first-place Shea in Division III-North with a couple of games over the next week.

The Panthers faced off with Hope (3-5) on Wednesday, but the results were unavailable at press time. They will travel to the Providence Career and Technical Academy on Monday at 5 p.m. to face off with Central (6-2 in D-III South).

The Knights had ripped off four consecutive wins heading into a Wednesday tilt with Mount Pleasant.
