Late but great
POLISHED TOMATOES: Gwen Mezak, who on weekdays works at CVS corporate offices, wipes moisture from freshly picked tomatoes. Her husband, Chris, left a desk job to run gC Farms six years ago and doesn’t regret the move. In addition to produce, the farm has chickens that are raised for their eggs.
YOU WON’T FIND IT AT THE SUPERMARKET: Nancy Alvino displays a Purple Cherokee tomato grown at gC Farms. Nancy’s father, Augustine, brought the Coventry farm in 1950 and it has been part of the family ever since. For an extended period, the land went unfarmed. Then six years ago Nancy’s son-in-law and her daughter, Chris and Gwen Mezak, revived the farm.
A cooler and wetter summer has delayed the ripening of tomatoes, but they’re here now and ready for eating. The selection offered by gC Farms at the Pawtuxet Farmers’ Market Saturday at Rhodes Place covered the range from cherry tomatoes to Purple Cherokee. gC Farms is a regular at the market that features not only locally grown produce and honey, but also coffees and fresh caught fish. The market is open Saturday mornings.
