Mardi Gras Ball at Rhodes attracts all ages

The Cranston Herald ·

This February 10 there will be two world-renowned bands attracting hundreds of Cajun and Zydeco music lovers to the grand ballroom to dance their hearts away to toe-tapping/knee slapping music that warms up a cold February night, taking us back to the bayous of Louisiana.

Chuck Wentworth has attracted music lovers of all ages to his Labor Day Rhythm and Roots Festival in Ninigret Park, promising them a chance to party again in February.

This year he brings the very best of the two genres: Beausoliel with Michael Doucet, playing traditional Cajun music, and Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Chas playing a high energy music that substitutes a larger accordion and more amplification. Both groups draw huge crowds at Rhythm and Roots and wherever they play around the world.

Added to the artists list this year is The Knickerbocker All Stars, a talented group of musicians out of Westerly that play everything from Cajun to jazz.

The Mardi Gras Ball is now in its 26th year and is highlighted by a costume contest, where individuals and small groups dress in colorful costumes, with a chance to win prizes, including tickets to the Labor Day weekend. VSA ARTS benefits from some of the proceeds.

Great southern cooking, including jambalaya, crawfish pie and filet gumbo is provided by Chili Brothers.

Tickets are $30 in advance and $40 at the door, with special prices for tables of 10.

I have seen three-generation families enjoying a night out at one of the many tables that circle the dance floor.

Continuous live music from 6:30 to midnight and Mardi Gras decorations keep the festive atmosphere alive.

I’m not a dancer, but I love the music and enjoy sitting in the balcony and watching the bands and the floor full of dancers of all sizes, shapes, dress and ages.
