Marziale's defensive effort helps Amcats to victory

The Cranston Herald ·

Former Cranston West standout Stefano Marziale had a monster day on defense as the Anna Maria football team celebrated a rare home win this past Saturday over Gallaudet.

The Amcats entered the win column for the first time this season with a 27-13 triumph over the Bison, which marked the program’s first victory at home since a 42-14 rout of Castleton in 2013.

Marziale was here, there and everywhere for the Anna Maria defensive unit, picking up a game-high 14 tackles and 1.5 sacks while also recovering a fumble that he forced midway through the second quarter.

The ex-Falcon’s performance further boosted his credentials as the Amcats’ undisputed defensive leader, as he is the team’s leader in most statistical categories, including tackles (87), sacks (four), forced fumbles (three) and fumble recoveries (two).

Anna Maria will be looking to complete the season – and by extension, Marziale’s football career – on a high this weekend, as it will finish its campaign with an away trip to Becker on Saturday.

Lambrese closes season strong

The 2016 season for the Rhode Island College volleyball team is in the books, but not before Cranston West alumna Courtney Lambrese was able to string together a series of award-winning performances.

Her play in victories over UMass-Dartmouth, Framingham State and Worcester State netted the former Falcon the Little East Conference’s offensive player of the week honor for the week ending Oct. 30.

Lambrese’s best performance of the week came on Oct. 29 in the Anchorwomen’s season-ending sweep of Framingham State and Worcester State.

She opened her day with 20 kills, six digs and a pair of aces versus the Rams, while her 18 kills and 13 digs helped RIC secure a win in straight sets against the Lancers.

Even though the Anchorwomen fell just short of the .500 mark with a 12-13 record this fall, Lambrese can take pride in her play this season.

One of only two RIC players to appear in all 25 matches, she racked up 258 kills and 137 digs, good for second and fourth on the team, respectively.

Lynch earns 13th at championship meet

La Salle graduate and Cranston native Cianna Lynch’s freshman campaign on the Salve Regina cross country team wrapped up on Oct. 29 at the Commonwealth Coast Conference championship meet with another fine run.

She crossed the line in 13th place with a time of 24 minutes, 35 seconds, second among the 22 Seahawks that competed in the race.

Her performance helped Salve secure a second-place finish in the team competition, finishing behind a University of New England squad that swept the top five to claim its fifth straight conference crown.
