The vice principal at Hampden Meadows School in Barrington called police on Monday, Sept. 18, after a teacher spotted two men — one holding a knife and the other a stick — wandering in the woods behind the school.

Police received the call at about 1 p.m. and quickly responded to the school, but the men were already gone. Officers also checked the woods near Kent Street Pond, and along the Hampden Meadows Greenbelt, but did not see the suspects.

According to the police report, the men told a teacher that they were hunting for mushrooms. They said the mushrooms were very valuable.

The school's playground and field space are located behind the building near the woods. It was not clear whether students were outdoors when the men were spotted.
