SHOPLIFTING

On November 7 around 8 p.m., Officers Eric Lima and Walter Larson were dispatched to the Bald Hill Road Walmart for a report of three women shoplifting.

Upon arriving on scene, the officers observed three women exiting the store who matched the description provided to police by store personnel. When the women saw the officers, they turned around and re-entered the store, where they were stopped by security and escorted to the store’s asset protection office after being informed of the reason.

Security informed the officers that around 7:30 p.m., the three females, identified as Jamie Bailey, 22, of 82 Bowdoin Street, Apt. #2 in Providence; Jasmine St. Hill of 63 Wendell Street, Providence, and Rhoda Morgan of 303 Potters Avenue in Providence, all entered the boys department. There they selected items of clothing that reportedly were then concealed in their purses, and the trio proceeded to the front of the store where one of them paid for one item. They then passed the checkout stations without paying for the additional merchandise that combined had a value of $332.

All three were taken into custody and transported to police headquarters to be processed. A small child who was with the women was released to another guardian with permission. Bailey and Morgan were charged with misdemeanor shoplifting and issued a court summons.

St. Hill’s charges were modified to reflect a felony shoplifting offense and habitual shoplifting as she had previous shoplifting charges from December 2008 and September 2012.

SUSPENDED LICENSE

Tinted windows and a broken side view mirror recently led to a woman’s arrest for several violations.

Officer Matthew Moretti was on patrol approaching the intersection of Post and Airport Roads when he observed a Nissan Maxima traveling west on Airport Road with a broken driver’s side view mirror and windows that were tinted. He initiated a traffic stop in the area of Grid Iron Ale House.

There he met with the driver, identified as Kalyssa Diakite, 21, of 47 Commodore Street in Providence. Through background checks, it was determined that Diakite had a suspended Rhode Island driver’s license and an outstanding warrant for failure to appear for a pre-trial conference on a shoplifting charge. She was taken into custody without incident and transported to police headquarters to be processed while her vehicle was towed.

She was issued violations for operating a vehicle with an unlawful sunscreen and driving with a suspended license. Diakite’s outstanding warrant was a hold without bail warrant, and she was transferred to women’s intake at the Adult Correctional Institution.

LARCENY

Officer Gavin McVeigh was dispatched to the Warwick Avenue Stop & Shop on November 8 around 5 p.m. after being advised that there was a shoplifting in progress. Dispatched advised Officer McVeigh that a large male suspect approximately 6 feet tall with facial hair wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt had just left the supermarket and was last seen behind Quinn Funeral Home.

Several officers then made a check of the area behind Quinn’s and Big Lots, with negative results. Eventually, officers stopped an individual in the vicinity who matched the given description and had been walking behind the businesses.

A security member from Stop & Shop arrived on scene but was unable to positively identify the man as the suspect. Security was then transported back to the store and provided officers with a written statement describing that just prior to 5 p.m. he observed a male removing several Red Bull energy drinks from a shelf and placing them in a carriage. The suspect then obtained paper towels and laundry detergent, then pushed the carriage past the registers and out to the parking lot.

Security attempted to stop the man in the parking lot, but the male left the cart behind and made his way across Warwick Avenue. The carriage, with $360.01 worth of merchandise, was recovered.

Surveillance footage captured a suspect wearing a black Boston Red Sox hat with a white letter B and a black Echo Unlimited hooded sweatshirt with a red undershirt, as well as dark colored jeans. The man also had a goatee. Police were provided with a DVD containing security footage of the incident, along with a receipt for the merchandise.

Currently, there are no suspects, but the case was forwarded to detectives for review.

OUTSTANDING WARRANT

A car found at Conimicut Point Beach after sundown led to the arrest of a woman for an outstanding warrant.

Officer Alfred Silveira was conducting a routine patrol of the park around 5:05 p.m. on November 6. The park is open from sunrise to sunset, and his report noted that the sun had set at 4:34 p.m. and that the park was dark.

He soon observed a black Honda Civic parked along the beach with two occupants and exited his vehicle in order to advise them that the park was closed. The passenger was then overheard saying a resigned expletive as the officer approached.

Upon obtaining their identifications, the passenger, Lisa Silvio, 30, of 125 Johnson Street, Apt. 3, Pawtucket, immediately stated that she had a warrant and was going to court the next day. A routine check revealed that she has an outstanding Third District Court warrant.

Silvio was handcuffed, placed in the cruiser and transported to police headquarters, where she was booked and processed. She awaited the bail commissioner, and the driver of the vehicle eventually provided the $270 for her release.

MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT

Officer Steven Moretti was dispatched to the area of 479 Providence Street on November 10 around 9:30 p.m. for a third party report of a motor vehicle accident.

On scene, Officer Moretti observed a blue Honda Pilot on the sidewalk with its right front passenger side tire blown out. The vehicle also had heavy damage to the right passenger side front bumper and the passenger side airbag had been deployed.

Contact was made with the driver, identified as Sondra Bedard, 40, of 13 Oakland Drive in West Warwick. She told the officer that she was heading west after coming from a nearby restaurant, and while she was driving she looked down to grab something and her vehicle swerved to the right. Bedard stated that she hit and mounted the curb and then struck a fire hydrant on the sidewalk.

The hydrant was observed to be about 200 feet from its original location in the parking lot of the Tollgate Commons Apartment complex. Rescue was called and responded to evaluate Bedard, who was clear of any injury.

While speaking with Bedard, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol emanating from her breath. Her speech was slurred and her eyes were bloodshot and watery. According to the report, when asked if she had anything to drink she stated that she had four glasses of wine at the restaurant. Bedard agreed to submit to a series of standardized sobriety tests and additional officers were called on scene for assistance.

After administering the tests, it was determined that Bedard was not fit to safely operate a motor vehicle. She was arrested and transported to police headquarters, where she later refused a chemical breath test.

Bedard was issued a summons and violations for driving under the influence, refusal to submit to a chemical test, and laned roadway violations. She was later released to her husband.

On November 7 around 8:30 p.m., Officer Mitchel Voyer responded to the home and met with the victim, who told him that she parked her car in her driveway around 5:30 p.m. When she returned later that evening, she found that the rear windshield had a large hole in it and was shattered and that there was a brick on the car floor behind the passenger seat.

A check of the area proved negative for any suspicious persons, and the victim also did not notice anyone in the vicinity. The case was forwarded to detectives for review.
