CRIME SPREE

Warwick Police have identified John Chiellini, 43, whose last known address was in West Warwick, as the suspect responsible for three separate crimes committed between April 6 and 7.

According to police reports, on April 6 at 11 p.m. a male subject entered the Extended Stay America hotel on West Natick Road and threatened the clerk with a gun, which was never shown, and attempted to rob the hotel. The suspect then fled the hotel on foot prior to obtaining anything.

A short time later, at 1:30 a.m., Warwick Police Department responded to the report of a robbery at the Quaker Lanes Shell “Seasons” station, where a white male was reported to have entered the store and threaten the clerk with a gun, which was never shown, and demanded money from the register. The suspect then left the store on foot with two items he had selected from the store.

That same night, at 3:17 a.m., a Warwick Police officer observed that the front door of the Subway Sandwich shop at 719 Bald Hill Road had been smashed with a rock. It appeared that entry was attempted, however never gained.

Detective Sgt. Eric Falcofsky, Detective Kerri Chatten, along with members of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, completed an extensive examination regarding these three incidents and determined that John Chiellini was solely responsible for all three crimes.

Chiellini was arrested and arraigned at the Third Division District court on April 10 for the following three felony charges: assault with intent to commit robbery; first degree robbery; and attempted breaking and entering. He is currently being held at the Adult Correctional Institute awaiting trial.

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

A woman who reportedly was observed rapidly spraying perfume into her mouth was recently arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence.

According to Officer Ali Jaafar’s report, he was exiting the Airport Plaza onto Post Road on April 5 around 11:15 p.m. when he observed a maroon Honda Civic that did not have its lights on. He then observed the vehicle continue north on Post as it made its way into the far right-hand lane at the Airport Road intersection. The car stopped at the red light, and when it turned green the vehicle continued traveling straight ahead before swerving left without signaling.

A traffic stop was then initiated, and Officer Jaafar made contact with the driver, identified as Royah Sultan, 23, of 75 Maple Avenue in Riverside. The officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol emanating from her breath as he spoke with her from the passenger’s side of the vehicle. The officer also noted an extremely strong odor of perfume, as if it were spilled in the vehicle prior to being stopped.

Officer Jaafar noted that Sultan’s eyes were severely bloodshot, her face was flushed red, and her speech was slurred. Sultan told the officer she was on a date at the Dublin Rose in Seekonk and was on her way to her date’s house in Warwick. The officer then noticed a half empty bottle of wine on the floor of the passenger side of the car that had been re-corked. Sultan told the officer that she had one 16-ounce beer at the restaurant before leaving. Additional officers were then requested for assistance at the scene.

When those officers arrived, they observed Sultan take a bottle of perfume from her purse and rapidly spray it into her mouth. She was quickly asked to stop and the perfume was taken from her. When asked why she was doing this, Sultan stated that she did not want the officers to think that she was intoxicated due to the smell of any drinks she had. She was then asked to partake in a series of standardized sobriety tests, which she agreed to.

Prior to beginning the test, she was again questioned about drinking that evening. Sultan then said she had two 16-ounce Samuel Adams beers and proceeded with the test. Later, she said they were 20-ounce beers. Based on her performance and the officer’s training and experience, she was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. She agreed to take a portable breath test, which produced a blood alcohol reading of 0.185. Her car was then towed and Sultan was transported to police headquarters.

At the station, Sultan refused to take a chemical breathalyzer test. She was processed and photographed and issued citations for driving under the influence first offense, refusal to submit to a chemical test, laned roadway violations and use of head lamps required. She was later released to a sober adult.

STOLEN WHEELS

On April 6 around 9:04 p.m., Officer Jacob Elderkin was dispatched to the Teamworks parking lot on Jefferson Boulevard for a report of a car missing its tires and rims.

Officer Elderkin met with the car’s owner, who stated that he had arrived at the location around 7:30 and stayed for about 70 minutes. When he returned to his vehicle, he discovered the missing rims and tires. He described them as an aftermarket upgraded option that were silver and black alloy rims valued at approximately $2,500.

There was no video surveillance footage available of the incident, and there are currently no suspects or witnesses. The owner indicated that he wanted to pursue criminal charges if a suspect is found.

At 9:55 p.m., Officer Elderkin was then dispatched to the Ocean State Theater on Jefferson Boulevard for another report of a car missing its wheels. At the theater he spoke with the victim, who stated she worked at the facility and arrived there at approximately 6 p.m. When she returned to her car she found all four rims and tires missing, and the car resting on two small cement blocks.

There was no video surveillance available of this incident, and there are no suspects or witnesses. The woman advised that she did wish to press charges if a perpetrator was found.

TINTED WINDOWS

Officer Matthew Barlow was on patrol in the area of Narragansett Parkway and Post Road on April 8 around 4 p.m. when he observed a car traveling south that had sunscreen material on all four windows as well as the rear window. A traffic stop was initiated at Salter’s Grove.

The driver, identified as Steven Berdugo, 21, of 83 Detroit Avenue, third floor in Providence, stated he did not have a license. The owner of the vehicle was then notified and she responded to the scene to take custody of the vehicle.

Berdugo was arrested and charged with one count of driving on a suspended license, third offence. He was later released.

WALLET STOLEN

On April 8 around 5:23 p.m., Officer Michael Walker responded to the Bald Hill Road Target for a stolen purse report.

At the scene he spoke with the woman victim, who explained that she had left her purse in a basket in the front of the snack bar just outside of the front doors while using the restroom. When she returned, the purse was gone.

Described as a black leather bag, the purse contained a brown leather wallet with $133 inside, assorted credit cards, her license and medical cards. There was also a black cell phone that was taken. Officer Walker’s report indicates attempts to obtain video surveillance are underway. Currently, there are no suspects.

HOTEL HAPPENINGS

While on patrol at the Post Road Comfort Inn on April 11 just after 2 a.m., Officer Jonathan Reiff observed a black Nissan Maxima enter the parking lot. The officer observed that the car, which had three occupants and drove around the building for several minutes, did not have the proper parking tag to be in the lot.

A check of the license plate revealed that the plates did not match the vehicle. A traffic stop was then initiated and contact was made with the driver. She stated she was giving a friend, identified as Stacey Mitchell, 21, of 13 Sack Street, Apartment 2 in Providence, a ride to the hotel so he could meet his brother. They were unsure which hotel the brother was staying at.

Background checks revealed that Mitchell had an outstanding warrant from Providence for domestic simple assault. He was then taken into custody and transported to police headquarters before being transported to the Providence Police Department.
