DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

Officer David Boardman was on routine patrol traveling east on West Shore Road on April 29 around 1:23 a.m. when he observed a 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis also traveling east. According to his report, the officer observed the vehicle cross the double yellow line on three occasions, as well as the fog line on two occasions.

The car was also seen attempting to pass another vehicle traveling in front of it. A traffic stop was then initiated in the area of West Shore Road and Warwick Neck Avenue. Contact was made with the driver, later identified as Fausto Succi, 47, of 82 Elmdale Avenue in Warwick. Upon speaking with Succi, the officer observed signs of intoxication and an odor of alcoholic beverages.

When asked if he had been drinking that evening, Succi said he was coming from the Italian Club and had drunk three beers. Succi then consented to partake in a series of standardized field sobriety tests. During those tests, he later said he had “maybe four or five beers.”

Based on the officer’s experience and training, it was determined that Succi was unfit to operate a motor vehicle safely. He was placed in handcuffs and transported to police headquarters while his car was towed. At the station, Succi agreed to take a chemical breathalyzer test, which produced blood alcohol readings of 0.180 and 0.170 percent.

He was booked, processed and held before being released to a sober adult. Succi was charged with driving under the influence first offense, laned roadway violations and using the breakdown lane for travel.

ANIMAL IN DISTRESS

Around 1:34 p.m. on April 29, Officer Michael Walker was dispatched to the Warwick Mall food court parking lot for a report of a dog locked in a vehicle and possibly in distress.

At the scene Warwick Mall security pointed out the vehicle, a blue 2012 Subaru Outback with New York License plates, to officer Walker.  The car’s front windows were cracked down about two inches, and a small black dog was seen sitting in the front passenger seat with his harness secured in the seat belt buckle so it could not move from the seat.

The dog appeared to be very hot, and was panting. No water in the immediate area was seen and the outside temperature was 84 degrees, with a sunny sky. Both the officer and security were able to manipulate the interior part of the door’s lock and unlocked it. The dog was then taken from the car and placed in the air-conditioned cruiser before being transported to the Warwick Animal Shelter.

Officer Walker left a note in the vehicle’s front passenger seat indicating that the dog was located at the shelter.

On April 30 at approximately 1:10 p.m., Officer Albert Marano was dispatched to Manor Drive for a report of a lawn mower that was stolen from a resident’s yard.

Upon arrival he spoke with the complainant, who stated she took the lawn mower out of her shed around 9:30 and cut her lawn. She then left to run errands and returned home around 12:30 p.m. when she then noticed someone had taken the mower.

Identified as a red and black Yard Machine self propelled mower, the homeowner estimated the machine’s value at about $150. While there are currently no suspects, an investigation is ongoing and the victim stated she wished to press charges of a suspect was found.

At the lot the officer met with the car’s owner, who stated she parked the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee in the hotel’s rear lot on April 23. She then went on a trip and when she returned, she noticed that the passenger side window had been smashed in.

The only thing missing from the vehicle was a child’s small VCR valued at approximately $20. There were no cameras where the car was parked and there are currently no suspects.

CAR ACCIDENT

Officers Aaron Kay and Brian Chianese was dispatched to the area of The Shanty restaurant on Post Road for a report of a motor vehicle accident in the parking lot.

At the scene officers spoke with Kelly Pacheco, 41, of 41 Bristol Avenue in East Providence, who stated she was driving her boyfriend’s Jeep which had been parked in the lot. Pacheco said that she and her friends had been at the restaurant and were leaving, and as she backed out of her parking space she backed into another vehicle.

While conversing with Pacheco, officers observed that her eyes were bloodshot and watery, and a strong odor of alcohol was emanating from her breath. She told officers that she had consumed two alcoholic beverages and was okay to drive. She then agreed to take sobriety tests, and later refused to take a preliminary breath test.

A determination was made based on the officers’ training and experience that Pacheco was unfit to drive and was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. She was then transported to police headquarters, where she refused to take a chemical breathalyzer test.

A background check revealed a DUI charge in 2013 with a conviction. Due to that conviction being within a five-year window, she was charged with driving under the influence, second offense, and refusal to submit to a chemical breathalyzer test and refusal to submit to a preliminary breath test. She was later released to a sober adult.
