SHOPLIFTING

On April 27 around 2:45 p.m., Patrolman Michael Andreozzi responded to the Atwood Avenue Walgreens in reference to a larceny. At the store he met with a representative who stated a suspect, later identified as Michael Johnson, 37, of 225 George Waterman Road, Apt. C in Johnston, made a purchase and requested an extra shopping bag.

Johnson was then observed in the vitamin and exercise supplement section of the store, where he selected a Muscle Tech powder supplement and Hydroxycut supplements valued at around $200. He then placed the items in the plastic bag and exited the store without paying. A copy of the store’s surveillance footage was obtained as evidence. An attempt was made to contact Johnson at his last known address without success.

A warrant was later issued for Johnson’s arrest. On May 20, Patrolman Adam Parkinson and Detective Mark Bairos responded to the Cranston Police Department to pick up Johnson, who had been taken into custody without incident in reference to the outstanding warrant. He was then transported to police headquarters.

Johnson was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Emili Vaziri and released on $1,000 personal recognizance with a June 5 Third District court date.

STOLEN GOODS

While on patrol on May 18 around 9:45 a.m., Officer Derek Parascandolo was advised by dispatch that they had received a call about an erratic driver. The vehicle, described as an older model gold Honda, was seen driving west on Central Avenue towards Atwood Avenue. Dispatch also advised that the provided license plates were reported stolen out of the city of Warwick, and that the car was now parked in a lot located at 1184 Atwood Ave.

Upon arrival, Officer Parascandolo observed the vehicle was parked with the engine running and a male, later identified as Miguel Lopez Xiquin, 32, of 18 Cranston St. in Providence, was sitting in the driver’s seat. A traffic stop was initiated, and background checks on Xiquin turned up negative.

Xiquin told the officer that his friend “Johnny” let him borrow the vehicle that day, and provided no additional information. As a result, he was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters and later released with a Third District Court summons for receiving stolen goods, driving without a license. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

ASSAULT

While patrolling the area of Plainfield Street at Atwood Avenue on April 18 around 2:30 p.m., Lieutenant Joseph Salvadore observed a tan Nissan traveling west, and a registry check of the vehicle revealed the registration was not active and the plates should have been affixed to a different model car.

A traffic stop was initiated in the area of Mill Street. As the officer exited his cruiser, the driver, later identified as Shawn Cornwell, 40, of 43 Salmon St. in Providence, quickly accelerated and executed a three-point turn before heading east on Plainfield Street at a high rate of speed. The officer also observed a female passenger in the vehicle, and pursued after the car, which was traveling at speeds of 60 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour zone. It also swerved towards an oncoming cruiser operated by Officer Leveillee.

The car entered into Providence, at which time the Providence and State Police were advised of the situation. While in pursuit, the passenger in the vehicle opened her door and jumped out of the vehicle. Officers involved in the chase stopped to provide assistance, and the woman stated she was scared. She was transported to Rhode Island Hospital.

Eventually, the suspect vehicle was found on Salmon Street, but Cornwell was not located. The vehicle was then towed. An affidavit and arrest warrant was drafted for the criminal charge of felony assault, eluding a police officer in a high speed pursuit, and driving without a valid license.

On May 18 just after 5 a.m., Patrolman Andrew Broccoli responded to the Providence Police Department to take custody of Cornwell, who had been picked up on the outstanding warrant charge. He was transported to Johnston Police headquarters where he was processed and held for a District Court appearance.
