DUI

On June 12 at approximately 9:14 p.m. Officer Derek Mourato was on his post on Warwick Avenue, near Shaw’s, when he saw a car speeding down the road without its headlights on and swerving through lanes cutting off other cars.

He followed the vehicle up Warwick Avenue and down Post Road when it turned there, at which time he put on his lights but the car did not stop, continuing to drive erratically. He then put his sirens on and the vehicle eventually turned into Walmart, where it stopped at the entrance. At that point, Mourato got out of his car and the vehicle then sped off again into the Walmart parking lot. He got back in and followed it further, until it came to a final stop.

When he got out of his car, the driver, later identified as Lynn Keaney, 48, of 84 Sackett St. in Providence, stumbled out of her car eating a bag of popcorn. She asked the officer what he was stopping her for and he attempted a patdown since he saw her reaching under her passenger seat while she was coming to a stop. She then became combative and resisted him, flailing and swearing at the officer. He brought her to the ground, placed her in hand restraints, and at this time multiple officers arrived on scene to assist.

Keaney was restless while being questioned and banged her head on the back seat of the police car she was detained in. According to the police report, she was slurring her words and continued swearing at the officers. They also detected an alcoholic odor coming from her breath. She told the officers she had smoked crack that night and drank a nip of alcohol. An inventory search of the vehicle found a crack pipe in the middle console. The car was towed.

Keaney was taken to Kent Hospital for a blood draw, where she continued screaming profanities and swore at the nurse. She refused to submit to chemical test and wouldn’t sign the refusal form either.

Keaney was issued summons for DUI/Drugs/Alcohol 1st Offense – B.A.C. Unknown, Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test, Times when Lights Required, Speeding 11 Miles Per Hour in Excess, Laned Roadway Violations, Operation of an Unregistered Motor Vehicle, and No License on Person.

She was given court dates and left at the Kent Care Team for detox.

LARCENY

On June 7 at approximately 9:40 p.m. Officer Thomas Paine responded to the report of a stolen bike at the Shaw’s on Warwick Avenue.

The reporting party said he had left his bike outside the store to go in and when he came out five minutes later it was gone. He said the bike is worth around $95 and the bike could not be found anywhere around the store. Video surveillance later obtained showed a male leaving the parking lot with the bike. The report was forwarded to detectives. *** On June 9, Officer David Boardman responded to the report of a stolen bag containing a $2,100 watch and $350 headphones on a private beach in Warwick Neck. The reporting party said she had gone to the beach on May 23 and left her bag against a fence at the end of the beach path to take a walk, and when she returned a half hour later it was gone.

There were no suspects at the time. *** On June 9 at approximately 7:53 p.m. Officer Derek Mourato responded to the apartments on Quaker Lane for the report of larceny from a vehicle.

The reporting party said that sometime that day someone had taken three checks for her checkbook. There were no cameras around, she did not see anybody near the vehicle, and there were no witnesses. The victim wished to press charges if a suspect was found. *** On June 12 at approximately 6:19 p.m. Officer Quentin Tavares responded to the parking lot of LA Fitness on Bald Hill Road for the report of larceny from a vehicle.

The car’s driver side window had been smashed out the reporting party said her purse, which include $165 in cash, debit cards, credit cards, and several licenses, was taken. The woman’s husband arrived on the scene and showed a text message that said one of the credit cards was attempted to be used at Target to buy $1,078 worth of merchandise.

The Officer went to both Target stores in the area and the employees there said that the card wasn’t used in either of those stores, but rather the Smithfield location. The officer retrieved video footage of the suspect attempting to use the card at the Smithfield location, and it was placed into evidence. The case was forwarded to detectives.

SHOPLIFTING

On June 10 at approximately 12:32 p.m. Officer Christian Vargas responded to the Macy’s at the Warwick Mall for the report of a male in custody for shoplifting.

The loss prevention employees said that while looking at video surveillance they saw a male, later identified as Richard Silvia, 20, of 121 Salina St. in Providence, take several items from the fragrance’s and clothing sections of the store. He was taking the items out of their containers and putting them in a bag he brought in, as well as burning the sensors off of some of the merchandise.

He met up with a female and he came in with and walked out of the store without paying for the items. The loss prevention employees then apprehended Silvia and took him back in. The merchandise, which was totally valued at $109, was fully recovered.

Silvia was transported to police headquarters, where he was issued a court summons and charged with Shoplifting. *** On June 10 at approximately 6:30 p.m. Officers Tyler Stone responded to the report of shoplifting at the Walmart on Post Road. According to reports, the two females had fled from the scene in a vehicle they stole from the parking lot.

The two females reportedly had taken two hover boards from the store, valued totally at $402.32, and fled in the stolen car. A copy of video footage was taken and the investigation was continued. POSSESSION

On June 11 at approximately 11:22 p.m., Officer Jeremy Smith along with several members of the department were dispatched to the Greenwich Avenue Stop & Shop for a check condition emergency call. The reporting party stated that there was a male passed out at the wheel in a gray Toyota.

Officer Smith pulled into the parking lot and met with the reporting party, who had flagged the officer down. She said she had been there for several minutes attempting to wake the subject up without success.

Officer Smith approached the vehicle and found the man slouched forward in the driver’s seat with his head on the steering wheel. The officer was unsure if the man was breathing, and banged his flashlight against the window several times but received no response. Officers then made the determination to break the passenger side window to gain entry.

The man, later identified as James Lopardo, 24, of 115 Salem Ave. in Cranston, then awoke and was reportedly confused and disoriented. He attempted to start the vehicle, however officers then removed the keys. Lopardo was then helped from the vehicle.

Lopardo was reportedly unsteady on his feet, and officers observed what appeared to be fresh damage along the entire passenger side of the car. Lopardo could not explain the damage, and said he may have hit a pole coming out of his residence the day before.

Officers observed a plastic Ziploc bag in plain view, which contained half of a pill later identified as Xanax. Lopardo allegedly confirmed the pill was Xanax and that he did not have a prescription for it.

It was determined that Lopardo would be arrested and charged with one count of possession of a schedule I-V drug. He was transported to police headquarters and held as a probation violator.
