Police Log - 01/29-19

DUI

Officer Derek J. Hagopian reports being on patrol in a marked cruiser at approximately 8:22 p.m. Jan. 21 when he observed a gold Toyota Camry with Rhode Island registration traveling westbound on Main Avenue in the area of Gertrude Avenue.

Hagopian reports the Camry swerved over the fog line and struck the north side curb on Main Avenue with both passenger-side tires. The vehicle continued traveling west, straddling both lanes and at one point making a right turn onto Post Road from the left lane. The vehicle also made an abrupt stop at one point.

Hagopian initiated a motor vehicle stop in the area of 2400 Post Road. The operator of the Camry is said to have initially opened the driver’s side door before responding to the officer’s instructions to close the door and roll down the window.

The officer reports that the operator appeared confused regarding his destination and had difficulty providing his driver’s license. The operator was reportedly unable to produce registration and proof of insurance. The officer also states he detected a strong odor of alcohol emanating from the operator’s breath.

Hagopian states that the operator was asked to exit the vehicle and consent to field sobriety testing. He reportedly agreed to the testing and failed. A portable breath test was then administered. The officer reports the operator intentionally avoided the breath test.

The operator was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence. Hagopian reports subsequently observing an opened plastic sleeve containing Fireball nips in the vehicle. The operator was transported to Warwick Police headquarters, where he is said to have repeatedly said he did not understand the officer’s request to submit to a breath test.

Armando N. Oliva, 65, of 36 Erastus St., second floor, Providence, was charged with driving under the influence and cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test and laned roadway violations. He was issued summonses to appear in Third Division District Court and before the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal.

LARCENY

Officer Richard P. Odell reports responding to the lobby of police headquarters at approximately 8:47 p.m. Jan. 19 for a walk-in report of a larceny.

The reporting party told Odell that her phone and wallet had been stolen while she tried on clothes at the H&M location at the Warwick Mall on the night of Jan. 17. The wallet contained a debit card, $50 in cash, $100 worth of gift cards, her insurance card and an iPhone 6. The reporting party stated that according to a location app, her phone was in Pawtucket. She indicated she wished to press charges if a suspect were identified, and the matter was forwarded to detectives.

Officer Brian M. Murray reports responding to the Hampton Inn at 2100 Post Road on the morning of Jan. 22 for a report of a larceny from a motor vehicle.

The reporting party told Murray the passenger side front window of his leased vehicle had been smashed. A folder containing personal paperwork was missing from the front seat, the reporting party stated, and a black leather briefcase and Dell Latitude laptop were missing from the trunk.

No surveillance video was available, Murray reports. The case was forwarded to detectives.

SHOPLIFTING

Officer Justin N. Martin reports responding to the JCPenney location at 400 Bald Hill Road at approximately 6:30 p.m. Jan. 18 for a report of shoplifting.

The suspect was described as a female wearing a red hat. She had reportedly left the scene in a black Audi. A search of the immediate area turned up no results.

Martin then made contact with the reporting party, an asset protection associate with the store, who indicated the suspect had been acting suspiciously in the store and was identified as a subject in a previous shoplifting incident at the store. The suspect is said to have selected several pairs of Nike men’s pants and sweatpants, removed them from their hangers and exited the store without making any attempt to pay. The reporting party made contact with the suspect in the parking lot, at which point the suspect entered the black Audi and left the scene.

The suspect was further described as having black curly hair and wearing a black vest and camouflage pants. Eight items with a total value of $425 were identified as having been stolen. The asset protection associate indicated the store wished to press charges if a suspect were identified.

Surveillance video was placed into evidence, and the case was forwarded to detectives.

Officer Jordan P. Guyton reports responding with Officer Nicholas DiNardo to the Kohl’s location at the Warwick Mall, 650 Bald Hill Road, at approximately 1:25 p.m. Jan. 22 for a report of a shoplifting incident in progress.

The suspect, described as a white male standing approximately 5 feet, 10 inches, was said to be wearing a black jacket, sweatpants and a red beanie. Dispatch advised the suspected had been seen heading south toward the Community College of Rhode Island campus on foot.

Guyton and DiNardo were initially unable to locate the suspect after searching for approximately 25 minutes. After making contact with other officers, they spotted a man who matched the suspect’s description hiding behind a trashcan. The man was then taken into custody.

Officers then made contact with a loss prevention supervisor at Kohl’s, who provided a written statement. The supervisor stated that he had observed the suspect take four items into a fitting room before the leaving the store and making no attempt to pay. The stolen merchandise was valued at $159.96. Surveillance video was forwarded to police.

Christopher Wainwright, 32, of 16 Hornbine St., Cranston, was charged with shoplifting and held at Warwick Police headquarters as a probation violator.

SUSPENDED LICENSE

Sgt. Stephen J. Major reports being on patrol on Post Road southbound at approximately 11:40 p.m. Jan. 19 when he observed a tan 200 Nissan with obscured Rhode Island registration take a left into the Hampton Inn parking lot. A few moments later, the sergeant observed the same vehicle turn onto the Airport Connector westbound.

A check found the vehicle’s registration associated with a red Toyota, not the tan Nissan, Major reports. A traffic stop was then initiated.

The operator’s license came back as suspended, and the vehicle was found to be unregistered. Major also reports detecting the smell of marijuana in the vehicle, and the operator is said to have acknowledged possessing small baggie of marijuana in the center console.

Raymond D. Rivera, 22, of 167 Alston St., Providence, was charged with driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent offense, and cited for possession of marijuana, one ounce or less, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, driving without a license and display of registration plates. He was processed at Warwick Police headquarters and issued summonses to appear in Third Division District Court and before the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal.

WARRANT

Officer Ali M. Jaafar reports being posted on Interstate 95 south at the Route 37 overpass at approximately 7:34 p.m. Jan. 18 when he observed a vehicle bearing Rhode Island registration pass without any headlights or taillights illuminated.

Jaafar began to follow the vehicle, and a check found its registration was suspended. The registered owner was also wanted on a bench warrant issued from Sixth Division District Court. A traffic stop was initiated, and the operator was confirmed to be the vehicle’s owner.

Waleska Y. Ogando, 30, of 70 Sackett St., Providence, was taken into custody on the bench warrant. She was processed at Warwick Police headquarters and later transferred to the Adult Correctional Institutions.
