School summer vacation looking further & further away

Warwick Beacon ·

There’s no telling how long it will be before students get out of school for summer vacation this year.

Faced with today’s forecast of blizzard conditions, school was cancelled for today. As of press time, the administration had not decided to cancel classes on Friday, but regardless, storms and sick outs have already pushed the school year to June 14 for some schools and June 15 for others.

System-wide the schools need to make up two days of power outages on Oct. 30 and 31 caused by the winds of Hurricane Maria. Power remained out for an additional day for Toll Gate, Winman and Drum Rock, however, the education commissioner has waived that day.

Still, since Pilgrim, Veterans, Robertson, Park and Oakland Beach Schools were forced to close Oct. 16 due to the numbers of teachers reporting sick, they will have to make up the lost day.

With today’s closure and assuming no additional closures, the last day of school for schools closed by sick outs would be June 18 and June 15 for all other schools.
