Senior Games mark 21st year

The Cranston Senior Enrichment Center welcomed all competitors, their families, and friends to the 2016 Senior Games held at Cranston High School West over the weekend. Those ages 55 and older were able to join in for friendly competitions.

The senior competitions included various Olympic-style events including track and field, bowling, bocce, free throw shooting, horseshoes, billiards, board games, baseball throw, javelin throw, and golf. The top performers winning gold, silver, and bronze in their events will be presented with medals at a banquet this week.

The opening ceremonies were held in the high school auditorium and included greetings from Mayor Allan Fung and a presentation by guest speaker Gene Valicenti of NBC 10 and WPRO talk radio. Also addressing the crowd was David Quiroa, the city’s interim director of senior services.

The torchbearers this year were Frank Murga, 82, and Marie Carnevale, 86. The torch was lit by Tony Zambarano, 73. The national anthem was sung by Ray Scungio, 73.

Hundreds of seniors from Cranston and beyond participated in this year’s games.
