Senior project: St. Elizabeth residents channel their inner artists

Bristol work is part of a larger public art project to be unveiled later this month

Residents at St. Elizabeth Manor on Dawn Hill Road in Bristol channeled their inner artists Monday morning to take part in a mobile public art project.

Artist May Babcock is traveling around the state, working with senior artists at CareLink nursing homes and independent living facilities — of which St. Elizabeth is a part — on a paper sculpture to represent the organization’s 20 years serving Rhode Island. Details of the project’s final look have not been released.

The sculpture, due to be completed around Aug. 11, will rotate among public spaces around Rhode Island throughout the coming year.

May Babcock is an interdisciplinary artist based in Providence. Her studio processes combine printmaking, hand papermaking, sculpture, and book-arts techniques. Babcock exhibits nationally and internationally, and is an active member of the International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists (IAPMA) and the Friends of Dard Hunter Hand Papermaking.
