The Weekend Rundown: July 28-30

Providence Monthly Magazine ·

July 28-29: Water is Rhode Island’s greatest natural resource. It provides endless beauty and a bounty of delicious seafood that people covet all over the country. The Blessing of the Fleet will celebrate the gifts of the sea. The 47th annual celebration includes a road race on Friday, following by the main event itself: the blessing of the boats in Galilee on Saturday. Show up early to get a prime seat on the wall and watch the festooned boats parade (or sail) on by.

July 28–July 30: Westerly’s Wilcox Park is hosting The Colonial Theatre for Shakespeare in the Park. This year’s show is Twelfth Night, a story involving a shipwreck, twins separated at birth and a lot of gender-bending mistaken identity.

July 28-29: Providence gets even weirder when FringePVD comes back for another week of outside-of-the-box plays, concerts and performances that defy description. Family Fringe, a block of kid-friendly performances, is totally free.

July 28: Movies in the Park in Roger Williams Park offers a kid-friendly alfresco flick every other Friday. This week don’t miss The Secret Life of Pets.

July 28: The WBRU Summer Concert Series defines summer in the city as a giant group of happy people sipping ‘Gansetts and dancing in Waterplace Park. This week will feature The Beardogz opening up for Dreamers.

July 28-30: We’re including the Newport Folk Festival here knowing that tickets are super sold out, but just in case you might know a guy or are willing to pull out all the stops to get there, expect great performances from Wilco, Fleet Foxes and Regina Spektor. NPR usually streams select performances, so there’s always that.
