Tiverton casino comes up a winner

Count of Tiverton absentee votes confirms election night victory

With all absentee votes counted, Tiverton voters did indeed approve a casino for their town.

The casino was declared a winner late Thursday. Final tally among Tiverton voters: 4,305 for the casino, 3,939 against.

The measure passed by a much wider margin at the state level. For the casino to be built, it needed both local and state approval.

After Tuesday voting, the local question held a machine count lead of 3,927 to 3,644, a margin of 283 votes with around 800 absentee ballots left to count.

Twin River plans to build the $75 million casino complex on 45 acres near the state line in wooded land by the intersection. of William S. Canning Boulevard and Stafford Road. Twin River expects to open its new ‘convenience casino’ in the summer of 2018.

The plan calls for 1,000 slot machines, 30 table games, an 84-room hotel and a restaurant. The casino is expected to open in the summer of 2018.
