Two hurt in serious two-vehicle accident in Portsmouth

Portion of East Main Road closed for more than 2 hours

PORTSMOUTH — Two people were hurt in an accident shortly before noon Thursday on East Main Road, just north of Bramans Lane.

According to Portsmouth Police Detective Lt. Michael C. Arnold, a Ford pickup truck collided with a building supply truck that was travelling south on East Main Road.

The 83-year-old male driver of the pickup truck, along with a 75-year-old female passenger, were trapped inside the vehicle as a result of the collision, he said.

The Portsmouth Fire Department, along with Naval Fire and Middletown Fire, assisted in extricating the two from the vehicle. They were taken to a hospital due to their injuries.

The operator and a passenger in the building supply truck were uninjured.

The roadway was shut down for over two hours while investigators from the Portsmouth Police Detective Division, Portsmouth Accident Recon Team, Middletown Police and the Rhode Island State Police Truck Squad assisted with the investigation, Det. Arnold said.

The investigation is ongoing, he said.
