Two rescued Westport steers settle in at Ohio sanctuary

Lasa Sanctuary: 'They will live out their lives here'

For two young steers rescued from Westport, their final truck ride was not to the slaughterhouse but to Lasa Sanctuary in Ashtabula, Ohio.

There they join eight other cows and 100 other assorted rescue residents.

“Our beautiful Oscar Obi and Jackson Omani,” as they were named, “were rescued from the Westport ASPCA case.  They will live their lives out here on our vegan sanctuary.  We are honored to be able to assist in this way,” said farm founder and owner Joy Karuna.

She said the two are Herefords — primarily a beef breed — steers, perhaps miniature Herefords, and about a year and a half old.

Jackson Omani was “named after the King of Pop himself, Jackson is one cool guy. His middle name was inspired by the beginning of the Buddhist compassion mantra —‘Om mani padme hum’ — as we hope he will live a life of inspiring and resonating compassion within all who meet him,” Ms. Karuna said.

“’It takes a great deal of courage to see the world in all it's tainted glory, and still to love it.’” Our sweet Oscar Obi was named after the poet/playwright/novelist Oscar Wilde to whom we believe he has both a physical and wit resemblance. His middle name comes from the Igbo language of West Africa, meaning ‘heart.’

“Oscar is still settling in and is more timid than his brother, Jackson, but we know in time he'll warm up to us. Oscar is looking for a few sponsors to help cover the cost of his daily care. For $35 a month (that's only $1.33 a day) you can be one of his most special people reminding him always that his days of being just a number are long behind him.”
