United Way of Rhode Island seeks volunteers

Johnston Sun Rise ·

The United Way of Rhode Island is calling for volunteers to help make their 2017 Annual Day of Action a success. On Saturday, June 10, volunteers will sort, label and pack books — preparing them for distribution to children across the Ocean State. Last summer 119 volunteers sorted 40,000 books at this family friendly event and hopes that this year will be even more successful.

Annual Day of Action takes place at United Way of Rhode Island’s Valley Street headquarters, located in Providence. To accommodate volunteer’s busy schedules there are three shifts available: 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Volunteers will be treated to a light lunch.

A research study conducted by the University of Nevada-Reno found that having books in the home enhances the academic performance of all students, but has an even greater impact on students from low-income families. Those interested are asked to register to volunteer at https://uwriweb.org/dayofaction.
