The Warren Athletics won the Warren Little League Minor Division Championship at Jannitto Field Thursday night, sweeping the Nationals in a two out of three series that was closer than the 2-0 result would appear. The As won 10-7 in the first game and followed it up with a 9-8 victory for the championship.

The As, who were seeded fourth headed into the playoffs, got to the championship by beating the first place (10-1) Marlins in two games (7-2 and 11-10). The runner-up Nationals got to the finals by beating the Dodgers, 8-7 and 8-5.

Mateo Lopes led the Athletics’ offense with two hits and two runs scored, and Parker Dewolf and Andrew McCarthy also had hits.

For the Nationals, Jack Greer went three for three and scored two runs, and Ayden Callahan went two for three.

Pitchers for the Athletics included Andrew McCarthy, Nick Patalano and Parker DeWolf, 7, who struck out the last three batters. For the Nationals, Jack Thompson, Ollie Conway and Ayden Callahan too, the hill.

Athletics manager Jason Gale said he was proud of his team, the league’s youngest overall.

“Fifty percent of my team were seven and eight-year-olds,” he said. “Mix them together with some older boys who had been in the league and somehow we pulled it off.”

The Athletics were sponsored by Del’s Lemondade and the Nationals by 365 Sports.
