Thomas Degnan Jr. had been on the job since December 2016; Malik will fill in interim

Warren’s director of Public Works resigned abruptly over the weekend, after less than nine months on the job.

Thomas Degnan Jr., who was hired following the retirement of former DPW head John Massed in September, submitted a brief letter of resignation over the weekend, effective immediately. Warren Town Manager Jan Reitsma received the letter when he came in for work Monday morning.

“There’s not much more I can say about that,” he said. “We’ll have to see where we go from here.”

Until a new director is found, DPW foreman Jan Malik will step in to oversee the department, Mr. Reitsma said. With his broad knowledge of the department’s operations, he said Mr. Malik is the right choice to lead the department on an interim basis.
