Antique fire trucks to put on a show Sunday in Buttonwoods

Warwick Beacon ·

One of the state’s most historic non-profits – the Rhode Island Antique Fire Apparatus – has two missions for this Sunday’s annual Fire Truck Show.

First, there will be many, many fire apparatus from yesteryear on display at the Masonic Youth Foundation well-maintained and sea-side grounds at 115 Long Street in the Buttonwoods section of Warwick.

“There will be free admission and free parking,” Richard Quetta, a long-time Society official who also owns a pristine antique fire truck, announced earlier this week. “We’re inviting the public and are hopeful that people who come to enjoy our annual show’; all we’re asking is they bring a new, unwrapped toy for needy families we will distribute during the holidays.”

Quetta, whose late brother Frank J. Quetta Jr. was a captain in the Providence Fire Department and was promoted after he died from injuries sustained in a fire while on duty, will have his 1957 Ward LaFrance fire truck that serves as a special memorial to his late brother, added: “There will be family fun plus as well as hamburgers, hot dogs and soft drinks provided by the Providence Canteen.”

The event, formerly held at places like Johnston War Memorial Park and is being held at the Masonic Center for the first time, will also feature a Fire-matic Flea Market and musical entertainment by Joe Vingi of Pleasure Sounds Unlimited along with the famed Palestine Shiners Clowns.

While there will also be a unique display of old-time fire trucks, the Ocean State Vintage Haulers and Rhode Island Military Vehicle Collectibles Club will make their first-ever appearance and fill the specious Masonic Youth Center grounds with ageless trucks and extraordinary equipment.

Likewise, the Warwick Fire Department will conduct a demonstration while the Warwick Police Department’s K-9 unique will be on hand for yet another unique showing.

“We’ve been told time and again that our FREE show is a fun-filled event for families as well as those folks who enjoy the history of fire apparatus dating back through the years. So please, consider taking in our show and help support our special toys drive that will again directly put toys under for children under from needy families under the tree during the holidays.”

People will also be able to photograph their children around the many unique vehicles that will be on display Sunday all over the pristine park. The FREE show, as Quettta announced, will open at 10 a.m. and continue through 3 p.m.
