'Bolts look to remain perfect; Falcons seek first D-I win

The Cranston Herald ·

The Cranston East girls’ volleyball team has a pair of games this week as it looks to keep its unblemished record in tact.

The ’Bolts (7-0) tangled with Tolman (2-4) on the road Tuesday before hosting North Smithfield on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

East, as of press time, has a 2 1/2-game lead over second-place Scituate and Juanita Sanchez in Division II-North. The Cavaliers are the only squad to take East to five sets this season.

East’s latest matchup came against the aforementioned Spartans, and it dominated its division rival in three sets. Sam Levy had three aces in that matchup while McKenzie Richards added 12 kills.

West hosts the Hawks

Cranston West football is seeking its first Division I win of the season this Friday night at 7 p.m., but the task is unenviable.

Six-time reigning champion Bishop Hendricken comes to town, and the Hawks are fresh off another steamrolling. After picking apart St. Ray’s 41-7, Hendricken has now outscored its D-I opponents 104-14.

West’s offense has struggled mightily thus far (six points in two league games), but this will be a valuable measuring stick game. The Falcons (0-2 in D-I) will suit up against the best the state has to offer, allowing them to see how far away this young crew is from making noise.

’Bolts, Falcons to battle Sunday

The fall season has gone by rapidly, and thus it’s already time for the Cranston City Cup.

Despite tough years for both programs, the East and West girls’ soccer teams will tangle on Sunday at 5 p.m. at Cranston Stadium for city bragging rights.

The ’Bolts have posted a 1-4-3 record in Division II this season, but they have grabbed three points in the standings in their last four games. The Falcons are 1-7-1 in Division I, notching their first win of the year last Monday against Bay View, 2-0. West also tied undefeated La Salle, 1-1, earlier in the campaign.

West’s Paige Ring and East’s Anna Botts have each potted three goals so far, so they should be the scorers to watch in this one.

The boys’ soccer programs for East and West will tangle at 6:30 p.m.

West sits just outside the top 10 teams in D-II with a 2-5-1 record. It has a couple more games before City Cup, but it was able to work a 1-1 tie with North Smithfield last Thursday to foster some momentum heading forward.

A youthful East squad is battling for a playoff spot in Division III and will undoubtedly benefit from the better competition on Sunday. The ’Bolts (3-2-3) have played every opponent close this season, including a scoreless tie with undefeated Pilgrim and a 1-0 loss to reigning champion Davies.

East’s Richmond Miamen leads the team with seven goals, but freshman Kerin Murillo has had a remarkable start to the year. His 13 points (five goals, eight helpers) are good for first on the team.

For the Falcons, Gil DelValle has a team-leading four goals while Aaron Ly is first with five total points (two goals, three assists).

Surging West girls’ volleyball has busy week ahead

After an 0-3 start to the year in Division I, the Cranston West girls’ volleyball team has gone on a tear.

The Falcons have won five of their last seven games, including wins over Chariho and South Kingstown. West took La Salle to five sets in a loss last Wednesday.

The squad faced a gauntlet this week, though, playing three games in the span of four days. The Falcons hosted Classical on Tuesday and traveled to North Kingstown Wednesday night, but those results were unavailable at press time.

They return home for a game against Cumberland (7-3) at 6:30 p.m. on Friday night.

’Bolts field hockey with back-to-back games

Cranston East field hockey has dropped three in a row, and it will need some herculean efforts to end that streak this week.

The ’Bolts will host Chariho and South Kingstown, which have a combined Division II-South record of 14-4. The Chargers come to Cranston Stadium on Thursday at 4:15 p.m., while the Rebels take to the turf on Friday at 3:45 p.m.

West girls’ tennis faces undefeated Prout

It will probably be its most difficult test of the year.

The Cranston West girls’ tennis team, which has posted an 8-2 record in Division II this year, will host undefeated Prout (9-0) on Thursday at 4 p.m.

The Falcons had a tuneup against winless Portsmouth on Tuesday afternoon, but results were unavailable at press time.

East hosts top-table Townies

The girls’ tennis team in green has had its own impressive season.

The ’Bolts have amassed a 6-2 record in Division III-A and sit in third place. It could help close the gap behind first-place East Providence (9-1) in a matchup this Thursday at Park View Middle School at 3:30 p.m.
