CCAP looks for help to fill 1,000 food baskets for needy families

Warwick Beacon ·

A local nonprofit is gearing up to assist families this holiday season and is seeking community help.

Comprehensive Community Action Program (CCAP), a “private non-profit community action agency that was formed as part of our nation’s War on Poverty,” is seeing a higher number of families seeking help purchasing food. They already serve more than 600 families in need at their food bank, so the need is great.

“The families we serve have lost their jobs, suffered an illness, or a different type of crisis, usually through no fault of their own,” said a CCAP release.

Thus, the Program is asking for more donations to match the increased need. Donations of frozen turkey, canned corn, canned green beans, canned yams, boxed mashed potatoes, boxed stuffing, canned turkey gravy, canned cranberry sauce, pie crust, canned pie filling, rolls, or $25 grocery gift cards are requested. CCAP’s goal is to provide 1,000 baskets for the holiday season and encourages individuals to host food drives at their churches, work places, service groups, schools, or communities.

All food and donations are due Thursday, November 10. They can be dropped off during between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. at the lower level of 311 Doric Avenue in Cranston, RI 02920. Pickup can also be arranged.

CCAP is the “largest community action program in Rhode Island providing Family Medicine & Dental Care; Behavior Health Services & Substance Abuse Counseling; Head Start & Child Care; Family Development Services; GED & Job Training programs, Youth Centers; Social Services, WIC Nutrition Program, Food Bank, Home Heating & Energy Assistance” and serviced 37,000 Rhode Islanders last year.
