JNP gets back in win column with shutout

The Johnston/North Providence Co-op boys’ hockey team snapped its four-game losing streak with a commanding, 6-0 shutout of Narragansett/Chariho Co-op at URI’s Brad Boss Arena on Saturday evening.

Panthers’ leading scorer Brandon Tanguay paced the JNP offensive attack with a hat trick, while Aidan Dorgan compiled two goals and one assist, Christian Campbell dished out three assists, Zach Morin had one goal and one assist and Michael Flori and Gianna Gollotto recorded an assist apiece.

JNP jumped out to an early lead behind three first-period goals. Morin started the scoring at the 5:14 mark off an assist from Flori to make it 1-0. Tanguay then scored two of his three goals before the first period was up. Campbell set up Tanguay’s first goal at 8:50, and less than three minutes later, Tanguay scored an unassisted goal to give JNP a 3-0 lead after 15 minutes.

Dorgan and Morin then set up Tanguay for his hat-trick goal at 5:26 of the second period to keep JNP’s momentum rolling.

Dorgan then scored to make it 5-0 off an assist from Campbell before the end of the second period. And Campbell and Gollotto assisted to Dorgan for the lone goal of the third period, pushing the final score to 6-0.

JNP is now 5-5, and its only game of the week will be played on Saturday night at 6 p.m. against West Warwick/Exeter-West Greenwich Co-op at Benny Magiera Ice Rink.

Panthers improve to 10-1

The Johnston girls’ basketball team overcame a three-point deficit at halftime to down visiting Rogers, 50-41, on Saturday night, handing the Vikings just their third league loss of the season.

Rogers came out strong, taking a 22-19 lead going into halftime. But, behind a game-high 23 points and 11 boards from Gabby DiRaimo, the Panthers were able to storm back for the nine-point victory.

Julianna Zalewski was also in double-figures for Johnston with 10 points, including three made 3-pointers, followed by Megan Philbrick with six points.

Izzy Booth led the way for Rogers with a team-high 20 points, followed by Keana McCants with nine points and Andrea Reddick with six points.

The Panthers were set to take on Exeter/West Greenwich on Wednesday night, but results were unavailable at press time. Johnston will also travel to Middletown (0-11) to take on the Islanders at 7 p.m. on Friday night.
